Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 ranked as the second best-selling hardware in the latest Japan retail activity.

Media Create Co. this week reported the PS3 sold 15,214 units between July 16 and July 22 to rank No. 2 in overall hardware sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 14,813 units to rank third the week prior.

The PS3 ranked one title in the top 10 for the week, Konami Corp.’s Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball at No. 5 with 62,740 units sold at launch.

Sony this week began pre-order sales for the first title release in the new Playstation Play initiative, a summer program to showcase new Playstation Network game releases.

The Expendables 2, a new 4-player co-op arcade shoot-em-up title, is now available for pre-order at $14.99.

Titles to be released in the program include The Expendables 2 Video Game (July 31), Sound Shapes (Aug. 7), Papo & Yo (Aug. 17), and Counter Strike: Global Offensive (Aug. 21).

Sony this week said Malicious is now available in the Playstation Network division of the Playstation 3.

Developed by Alvion, Malicious is a download action title in which users control a ‘Spirit Vessel’ and use the Mantle of Cinders, a malleable weapon, to defeat Holders – evil giants that threaten to destroy the Kingdom.

Square Enix Holdings Co. this week said it will release Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn to the Playstation 3 and the PC.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is a follow-up to the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. The title is said to include improved an enhanced features not found in the prior release.

The Last of Us for the Playstation 3 held in the top three ‘Most Wished For’ game titles at Inc. this week amid building demand for the product.

This week, The Last of Us ranked as the No. 3 Most Wished For title in’s Video Games division.

Developed by Naughty Dog Inc., The Last of Us is said to include survival and action elements amid abandoned cities decimated by a plague.

Developer 11 bit Studios this week said it will release Anomaly: Warzone Earth to the Playstation Network division before the end of the summer.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth features a top-down overhead map view of a warzone location. In each level, users control an on-field commander to guide a band of tanks, crawlers and other mobile units through enemy turrets to and endpoint.

The PSN version will include an exclusive local co-op mode to allow two commanders to support each other.

SNK Playmore USA Corp. this week released arcade classics Gang Wars and Time Soldiers to the Playstation Network division.

The SNK Arcade Classics releases are sold as PSP minis and are compatible with the Playstation 3.

Sales for the Playstation Vita ranked fourth in Japan in the latest retail data from Japan.

The PS Vita sold 11,932 units between July 16 and July 22 to rank as the No. 4 hardware for the week.

By comparison, the hardware sold 13,427 the week prior.

The PS Vita ranked one title in the top 10, Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball at No. 10.

Meanwhile, the PSP sold 13,058 units to rank No. 3 in the same period.

The PSP ranked four titles in the top 10, including Digimon World Re: Digitize at No. 4, Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball at No. 7, New Class of Heroes Mono at No. 8, Warriors Orochi 3 Special at No. 9.

Sony this week released a new update for Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational for the Playstation Vita.

Update 1.04 includes the option to invite friends to play in private tournaments, the option to play Stroke Mode and Match Mode online, Rank for Real Mode Tournaments, and the change to one game per day in Daily Tournaments Mode.

Sales for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 hardware fell to under 900 units in the latest Japan retail figures.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Xbox 360 sold 865 units between July 16 and July 22 to rank No. 7 in overall sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 930 units the week prior.

The hardware did not rank any titles in the top 10 for the week.

Microsoft in July recorded a 39 percent decline in Xbox 360 sales from the year prior to 1.1 million units in the fourth quarter. Xbox 360 hardware market share increased to 49 percent from 42 percent.

The Entertainment and Devices division, which includes the Xbox business, climbed 19.4 percent year-over-year to $292 million.

Microsoft cited a soft gaming market for the decline.

The Xbox 360 held as the top console for the 18th consecutive month in the U.S.

Microsoft this week announced the option to sign up for the Xbox Live Update Public Beta to allow members of the online community to test the latest update for the Xbox Live Dashboard.

Within hours the company announced high demand for the beta and closed future applications

The latest Xbox Live Dashboard update will include new features like Internet Explorer for Xbox, Personalized Dashboard Recommendations, and Enhanced Category Search.

Konami Corp. this week released the Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 demo to the Xbox Live division.

The demo will preview brand new features in the title, including Pro-Active AI to make runs and behave like actual players and Full Control elements like fully manual shooting.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 will be sold in late 2012.

Pre-order sales for the Xbox 360 Halo 4 Limited Edition Bundle gained this week at Inc. due to strong demand.

This week, the Halo 4 Limited Edition Bundle held a 132 percent sales increase to rank at No. 135 in Amazon’s Video Games division.

The Xbox 360 Halo 4 Limited Edition Bundle, to be sold Nov. 6, will include a custom Xbox 360 320GB SKU, two custom wireless controllers, Halo 4 standard edition, custom sounds and custom content at $399.99.

Activision Blizzard Inc.’s Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD for the Playstation Network and Xbox Live is a decent download that updates the classic skateboarding title with sharper graphics and online functionality in a Final Review.

Wreckateer is a standard motion projectile title for the Kinect sensor that deploys a range of ammunition to destroy large castles for points in a Final Review.

Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii hardware increased in Japan amid the release of a new Kirby title in the region.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Wii sold 9,002 units between July 16 and July 22 to rank No. 5 in overall sales.

By comparison, the Wii sold 6,747 units the week prior.

The hardware ranked one title in the top 10, Kirby’s Dream Collection: Special Edition at No. 1 with 100,286 units sold at launch.

Nintendo in July recorded a $220 million loss in the first quarter due to declining sales of the Wii console.

In the quarter ending June 30, held a net loss of $220 million on revenue of $1.08 billion.

Nintendo sold 710,000 Wii units between Apr. and June, less than half of the 1.6 million units sold in the same period last year.

Developer Crytek GmbH this week said that a version of Crysis 3 for Wii U is possible but not scheduled yet.

The publisher told publication CVG this week that it is working with Nintendo and that a release for the Wii U is possible.

Ubisoft Inc. this week said ports of current next-generation titles to Nintendo Co.’s Wii U platform require minimal investment by the third-party publisher.

Company CEO Yves Guillemont this week said the five out of seven titles to be sold at launch require a small reinvestment.

Additionally, the company’s two original titles for Wii U – ZombiU and Rayman Legends, were said to require much less investment than major franchise titles.

Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Nintendo 3DS held the top sales rank in Japan in the latest retail data from the region.

Majesco Entertainment Company this week said it will release new Cooking Mama Combo Packs to the Wii and Nintendo DS Aug. 14.

Mama’s 2-Pack for Wii will include Cooking Mama: Cook Off and Cooking Mama World Kitchen at $29.99.

Mama’s Combo Pack Volume 1 for the Nintendo DS will include Cooking Mama and Camping Mama: Outdoor Adventures at $29.99. Volume 2 will include Cooking Mama 2: Dinner with Friends and Crafting Mama at $29.99.

Media Create Co. this week said the Nintendo 3DS sold 44,399 units between July 16 and July 22 to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the week.

The hardware sold 47,063 the week prior.

The 3DS ranked two titles in top 10, including Rune Factory 4: A Fantasy Harvest Moon at No. 3 and Taiko no Tatsujin at No. 6.

The Nintendo DS sold 1,343 units for the week.

Meanwhile, Pokemon Black Version 2 and Pokemon White Version 2 sold 92,178 units to rank at No. 2. The sequel titles have sold 2.38 million in the region to date.

The Nintendo 3DS sold 1.9 million units in the quarter, an increase from 710,000 units the year prior at a $249 launch price.

The handheld has sold 19 million units to date.
