Nintendo Co. this week recorded a $220 million loss in the first quarter due to declining sales of the Wii console.

In the quarter ending June 30, held a net loss of $220 million on revenue of $1.08 billion.

Nintendo sold 710,000 Wii units between Apr. and June, less than half of the 1.6 million units sold in the same period last year.

The Nintendo 3DS sold 1.9 million units in the quarter, an increase from 710,000 units the year prior at a $249 launch price. The handheld has sold 19 million units to date.

The company in Aug. will sell the Nintendo 3DS XL, which includes a 4.88-inch main display, 90 percent larger the current Nintendo 3DS, and a 4GB SD card. It will hold an MSRP of $199.99.

The Wii U is scheduled to be released in 2012.
