Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 hardware increased in the latest Japan retail activity.

Media Create Co. this week reported the PS3 sold 16,399 units between June 25 and July 1 to rank No. 3 in overall hardware sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 13,785 units to rank third the week prior.

The PS3 ranked four titles in top 10 software sales for the week, including Atelier Ayesha at No. 2, Robotics Notes at No. 3, Resident Evil Chronicles HD Selection at No. 6, and .hack: Sekai no Mukou + Versus – Hybrid Pack at No. 10.

Sony may release a new Playstation 3 model according to recent FCC documents.

Consumer publication Eurogamer this week reported that the new FCC documents indicate a slimmer PS3 SKU with the model number CECH-4001x. Current models carry a 3000 series model number.

Proposed drawings relay a smaller PS3 footprint against the current PS3 slim model, which was released in 2009.

Sony Computer Entertainment this week said it will acquire Gaikai Inc., a cloud-based gaming company for $380 million.

In the acquisition, Sony will establish a new cloud service to expand its network business.

Gaikai was established in 2008 and is headquartered in Aliso Viejo, CA.

Sony Corp. this week said it will release System Software Update 4.21 for the Playstation 3 soon.

Update 4.21 is said to be an optional release that will improve software stability.

Sony this week said Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale for the Playstation 3 will be sold Oct. 23 at U.S. retail.

Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale will feature trademark characters from Playstation franchises, including Parappa the Rapper, Kratos from God of War, Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal, Col. Radec from Killzone, and Fat Princess.

Sony this week announced a set of new Playstation 3 game titles available for Playstation Plus members in the Instant Game Collection division.

New titles include Gotham City Imposters, Pac-Man Championship Edition DX and Renegade Ops.

Each title is available at no cost for Playstation Plus members.

Namco Bandai Games America Inc. this month said it will sell the Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Wizard’s Edition for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 in late Jan. 2013.

The Wizard’s Edition will include a 300+ page hardback physical copy of the Wizard’s Companion, a spellbook the main character uses throughout the game; plush doll of Drippy, and Golden Mite and Golden Drongo DLC items at $99.99 exclusively at Club Namco.

Developed by Level-5 and Studio Ghibli, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, to be sold Jan. 22, is a role-playing title in which a young boy who loses his mother traverses between the real world and the fantasy world when a doll passed on from his mother comes to life.

Capcom Co.’s Resident Evil Chronicles HD Collection is a sharp shooter for the Playstation 3 that includes two on-rails shooters that delve into alternate first-person scenarios for key characters and plot points in the Resident Evil franchise in a Final Review.

Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation Vita ranked second in Japan in the latest retail data for the region.

The PS Vita sold 22,638 units between June 18 and June 24 to rank as the No. 2 hardware for the week.

By comparison, the hardware sold 12,100 units the week prior.

The hardware ranked one title in top 10 sales, Konami Corp.’s Metal Gear Solid HD Edition at No. 8 selling 23,586 copies at launch.

Meanwhile, the PSP sold 11,461 units to rank No. 4 in the same period.

Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 hardware fell to under 900 units in the latest Japan retail figures.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Xbox 360 sold 861 units between June 25 and July 1 to rank No. 6 in overall sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 1,194 units the week prior.

The hardware ranked one title in top 10 game sales, Robotics Notes at No. 9.

Microsoft Corp.’s Halo 4 for the Xbox 360 will require a large file installation for users who opt to engage in the title’s multiplayer mode.

The Halo 4 product page disclaims that the Multiplayer portion will require an 8GB installation on either the console hard drive or an external USB drive.

In addition, a new Spartan Ops co-op component will require additional space to download new episodic content.

Halo 4, to be sold Nov. 6, is the beginning of Reclaimer Saga, an epic new adventure in the Halo universe.

Take Two Interactive Inc. this week released the Max Payne 3 Local Justice DLC.

The first downloadable content pack for Max Payne 3 includes three new multiplayer maps from the game’s final chapters, a new weapon, new item, new multiplayer faction, new Achievements, Trophies, and Social Club accomplishments.

The DLC is sold at a discounted launch price of $5.99 for PSN and the PC, and 480 Microsoft Points.

Activision Blizzard Inc. this month began offering a new pre-order bonus for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3, Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360, and the PC.

This week, customers who pre-order Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will receive the Nuketown 2025 bonus multiplayer map.

Retailer Amazon.com Inc. in May said pre-order sales for Black Ops 2 was more than ten times the amount of pre-orders for Black Ops in the first day of availability and more than 30 percent that of 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Developed by Treyarch, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, to be sold Nov. 13, will include a brand new single-player campaign and multiplayer functionality.

Sega Corp. this week said it will release Nights into dreams… to the Playstation Network, Xbox Live, and the PC this fall.

The digital download release is an HD remake of the original 1996 release for the Sega Saturn. The updated version will include enhanced graphics, all original levels, and the option to play the Sega Saturn version of the title.

Tecmo Koei Holdings Co.’s Dead or Alive 5 Collector’s Edition for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 and Microsoft Corp. Xbox 360 ranked in the top 25 pre-order sales at GameStop Corp.’s online division this week due to strong demand.

This week, the Dead or Alive 5 Collector’s Edition PS3 SKU ranked as the No. 21 best-selling pre-order product at GameStop.com.

The Xbox 360 SKU ranked at No. 24 in the same period.

The Dead or Alive 5 Collector’s Edition will include a steel case, premium swimsuit costumes for all DOA female characters, soundtrack, and poster at $79.99.

Capcom Co. this week released the Resident Evil 6 demo to the Xbox Live division of Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 for owners of Dragon’s Dogma.

The demo includes a preview of all three final campaigns, including Leon Kennedy, Chris Redfield, and Jake Muller.

Spelunky for the Xbox Live division of the Xbox 360 is a solid platform title that utilizes classic, challenging play against randomly generated levels in a Final Review.

Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii hardware ranked fifth in the latest retail data from Japan.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Wii sold 6,880 units between June 25 and July 1 to rank No. 5 in overall sales.

By comparison, the Wii sold 5,713 units the week prior.

The Wii ranked one title in the top 10, Fatal Frame 2: Wii Edition at No. 7.


Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Nintendo 3DS declined but held the top sales rank in Japan in the latest retail data from the region.

Nintendo this week said the Wii U console and the Nintendo 3DS will share a unified eshop account for online transactions.

Consumer website gonintendo this week reported that Nintendo will implement a unified account system for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS to facilitate online purchases from the Nintendo eShop according to a consumer representative.

The unified account will be valid in U.S. and Canada territories.

Media Create Co. this week said the Nintendo 3DS sold 65,267 units between June 25 and July 1 to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the week.

The hardware sold 66,953 the week prior.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo DSi sold 657 units for the week.

The 3DS ranked two titles in top 10, including Culdcept at No. 4 and Square Enix Holdings Co.’s Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry’s Wonderland 3D at No. 5.

Technology News

Activision Blizzard Inc. this week announced a partnership with Tencent Holdings Limited to release Call of Duty Online to China.

Under the agreement, Tencent, a leading internet service provider in China, holds an exclusive license to operate Call of Duty Online in mainland China. The game is free-to-play and monetized through the sales of in-game items.

Call of Duty Online is an online-based version of the first-person shooter franchise that will include the ability to personalize their weapons, characters and equipment. In addition, users can purchase enhancements to their weapons, gear, and perks built for the Chinese market.

Finally, the title is said to include an original story of Special Operations missions based in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare universe and a variety of game modes.

Google Inc.’s Nexus 7 tablet ranked in the top 10 pre-order sales at GameStop Corp.’s online division this week due to building demand.

This week, the Nexus 7 16GB SKU ranked as the No. 6 best-selling pre-order product at GameStop.com.

The game retailer is selling the Nexus 7 tablet 16GB SKU at $249.99.
