Sony Corp. may release a new Playstation 3 model according to recent FCC documents.

Consumer publication Eurogamer this week reported that the new FCC documents indicate a slimmer PS3 SKU with the model number CECH-4001x. Current models carry a 3000 series model number.

Proposed drawings relay a smaller PS3 footprint against the current PS3 slim model, which was released in 2009.

The new PS3 model may carry cost-reduced components to lower manufacture costs as the console reaches the end of its lifespan.

The PS3 was originally released in 2006 in a large and heavy SKU that sold at $499 to $599.

The updated PS3 Slim SKU launched at $299.

Sony in May recorded a $2.8 billion loss in the Playstation division due to declining sales of console and handheld products.

For the fiscal year ending Mar. 31, 2012, the PS3 sold 13.9 million units, down from 14.3 million in 2011. It sold 1.9 million units in the quarter.

PS3 software sales increased 8.7 million units in the year to 156.6 million units.

It expects console sales to fall to 16 million units next fiscal year.
