Wizards of the Coasts’ Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 for Sony Corp.’s Playstation, Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360, and the PC is a solid digital version of the classic card title that includes a preview of the latest card set addictive single-player and online modes.
Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 includes ten brand new decks, new Planechase Multiplayer Mode for up to four players, Encounter Game Mode and a preview of 100 cards to be sold in retail card decks in July.
In Magic: The Gathering, users place land cards in order to build Mana which can be used to execute spells. When the opponent’s HP reaches zero the game ends. Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 offers a great tutorial option and on-screen prompts to offer a step-by-step guide to the title. In addition, all help prompts can be turned off for veterans. Decks are pre-arranged for each player.
Users can enter a Campaign Mode to fend off increasingly difficult AI characters or enter multiplayer modes to battle in head-to-head matches or the new four-player Planechase Multiplayer Mode. Planechase includes rules that change dynamically and the option to tap lands manually.
The user interface is well-constructed with the ability to zoom in on each card and quickly execute commands like Attack (Creature or Player), Block, and Stop Timer to keep game flow speedy.
Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 is a solid digital take on the mega card game franchise. While users won’t be able to customize decks, the hefty new decks, online multiplayer modes and tutorials can have veterans and new users heavily engaged in battle.
