Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Inc. this week released LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes is a solid upgrade in the LEGO Batman franchise that delivers more characters, suit upgrades, and clever gameplay to let anyone take charge as the caped crusader.
Developed by Travelers Tales, LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes includes a brand-new open-world environment that allows users to explore a LEGO-based Gotham City or beam straight into a mission from the Batcave.
In addition to Batman, co-op partner Robin plays an important role in the campaign, with many levels requiring a consistent switch between both characters to proceed in each level. Both Batman and Robin can don new suits with a specific capability.
Batman can wear a new Power Suit to fire timed explosives that can shatter silver objects or an Electricity Suit to take or disperse electricity to activate levers. Robin can wear the Acrobat Suit to deploy a staff and swing to unreachable platforms or the new Freeze Suit to freeze water to build new platforms.
Each level includes a novel integration of suit powers to continually keep gameplay interesting.
In later missions, users can take the role of other DC Super Heroes, including Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern to help save Gotham City.
The graphics engine is solid at 30 frames-per-second. Gotham City is creatively built out of LEGO bricks, including two giant monolithic LEGO men that flank the entrance of the Arkham Asylum.
In addition, LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes is the first LEGO title to include character voices, all of which bring a wry humor and consistency from their respective franchises.
LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes is a fine update to the Batsuit. The title invigorates with new gameplay enhancements and LEGO charm that was thoughtfully built brick-by-brick into a brand new Gotham experience.
