Microsoft Corp. this week said it will manufacture and release a new tablet product called Microsoft Surface.
Microsoft Surface includes a 10.6-inch Gorilla Glass screen with 16:9 widescreen HD display, front and rear cameras, kickstand, and 2×2 MIMO Wi-Fi antennas.
The company announced two SKUs, one with an ARM-based Nvidia CPU running Windows RT and another with an Intel Core i5 CPU running Windows 8 Pro. The ARM-based SKU will include two USB 2.0 ports, microSD slot, microHD video port and weigh 1.5 lbs at 9.3mm thick. The Intel-based SKU will include two USB 3.0, microSDXC slot, mini DisplayPort video, and weigh 1.9 lbs at 13.5mm thick
In addition, the product can be used with a magnet-based Touch Cover or Type Cover, which includes a built-in keyboard and multi-touch trackpad.
Surface for Windows RT will be sold in 32 and 64GB SKUs and priced like comparable ARM-based CPU tablets. They will be sold around the launch of Windows 8.
Surface for Windows 8 Pro will be sold in 64GB and 128GB SKUs priced comparable to ultrabooks to be sold several months later.
