Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Inc.’s Lollipop Chainsaw for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 is a solid action title in cheerleader versus zombies world that is original and comical.
Developed by Grasshopper Manufacture, Lollipop Chainsaw introduces Juliet Starling, a cheerleader at San Romero High who happens to be a zombie hunter. When her school is attacked by zombies, Juliet takes out her trusted chainsaw to save her classmates and the world.
The control setup offers a variety of hack-n-slash functionality. Users can deploy low and high chainsaw attacks, in addition to pom-pom melee attacks to dizzy zombies. A dodge button allows users to hop over zombies and perform additional attacks. Finally, users can jump attack for added versatility.
Movement and attacks are accurate and allow users to hack and slice through mobs of zombies with flair. Combat is fun and levels are broken up at various points with objective-based sequences, like preventing flaming zombies from touching a dynamite-laced birthday cake in the school library.
Each zombie kill earns coins that can be used to purchase additional aids from health lollipops, HP increases, or new combos and moves at the Chop2Shop.zom internet stations.
Zombie kills also build up a super meter for Juliet to unleash one-hit kills for a limited time.
Boyfriend Nick (who becomes decapitated by is saved by a magic ritual) can help Juliet by being swung around, tossed, or placed on a headless zombie at select levels.
The graphics engine is solid at 30 frames-per-second. Character and zombie models are detailed against standard locations that beg to be destroyed by explosions. Music is well-produced with rock tunes and the occasional throwback to classics like Lollipop by The Chordettes.
Written by James Gunn, the script delivers sharp, witty, and self-aware dialogue from the oblivious rants of Juliet to the frustrated screams of a decapitated Nick.
Lollipop Chainsaw is a fun and original take on the standard hack-n-slash action title. With a solid combat system and wacky premise, the title cuts through the standard action title mold with flying colors.
