Nintendo Co. this week demonstrated New Super Mario Bros. U for the Wii U at the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

The user who controls the Wii U GamePad can tap the touchscreen to deploy platform blocks to aid or hinder players. Up to four blocks can be formed at once with each block crumbling after each step.

The blocks can help players gain access to Star Coins and other platforms that would otherwise be hard to reach.

The alternate play was fun and adds a fifth player to the mix for new party sessions.

The Wii U will be released in 2012.
