Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 held as the second best-selling hardware in the latest Japan retail activity.
Media Create Co. this week reported the PS3 sold 14,771 units between May 21 and May 27 to rank No. 2 in overall hardware sales.
By comparison, the hardware sold 12,026 units to rank third the week prior.
The PS3 ranked two titles in top 10 software sales for the week, including Capcom Co.’s Dragon’s Dogma at No. 1 selling 302,040 units at launch.
Sony will release the next Playstation console in 2013, according to a new report.
The Wall Street Journal this week claimed the successor to the Playstation 3 will include an optical disc drive following an internal discussion to release a download-only device.
Sony is said to continue using an optical disc medium due to scattered Internet reliability in global territories. In addition, typical game releases require multiple gigabytes of data, a lengthy and perhaps prohibitive download in territories with lower bandwidth.
Sony this week said it will release Ratchet and Clank: Full Frontal Assault to the Playstation Network division of the Playstation 3 this fall.
Ratchet and Clank: Full Frontal Assault is a download-only title that will include traditional third-person mechanics found in prior entries of the franchise.
The final game is said to include new online functionality to play with friends.
Sony this week released the Playstation 3 320GB Modern Warfare 3 Bundle to U.S. retail.
The bundle mincludes the PS3 320GB SKU, a copy of Activision Blizzard Inc.’s Modern Warfare 3, and a Dualshock 3 Controller at $299.99.
Sony this week began sale of new Ultimate Editions of full game titles in the Playstation Network division of the Playstation 3.
PS3 Ultimate Editions are full download games plus all DLC add-ons included. Titles include Red Dead Redemption, Infamous 2, Bioshock 2, MotorStorm Apocalypse, Call of Duty: Black Ops, L.A. Noire, Mafia II, Just Cause 2, and Mortal Kombat.
This week, PSN members will receive 30 percent off all Ultimate Editions titles, while Playstation Plus members will receive 50 percent off through June 4.
Sony this week said it will release Sports Champions 2 for the Playstation 3 this fall.
The Playstation Move title will include brand new sports activities from skiing, tennis, boxing, golf, bowling, and updated archery.

The PS Vita did not rank any software titles in the top 10.

Resistance: Burning Skies is set in 1951 amid an attack by the Chimera in the East Coast. Users take control of firefighter Tom Riley to take out the alien invasion.
Sony this week released the Gravity Rush demo for the Playstation Vita to the Playstation Network.
The Gravity Rush demo includes signature gameplay features found in the final game, including gravity mechanics that utilize PS Vita motion sensors, in addition to a preview of the open world environment.

The hardware ranked two titles in the top 10 software sales, including Capcom Co.’s Dragon’s Dogma at No. 4 and Monster Hunter Frontier Online Forward .4 Premium Package at No. 9.
Microsoft this week said it will release the Xbox 360 250GB Racing Bundle to U.S. retail in mid-June.
The bundle, to be sold in mid-June, will include the Xbox 360 250GB hardware, Forza Motorsport 4, and the Wireless Racing Wheel at $299.99.
Microsoft Corp. and Amazon.com Inc. this week made available the Amazon Instant Video application for the Xbox Live division of the Xbox 360.
The application will allow Xbox Live Gold members to rent or purchase more than 120,000 movie and TV shows.
In addition, Amazon Prime members will be able to watch more than 17,000 Prime Instant Videos at no additional cost.
Finally, the application includes support for Kinect to allow users to find and play videos with a wave or voice command.
EA Inc. this week released Mass Effect 3 Rebellion Pack DLC to the Playstation Network division, Xbox Live division, and the PC.
The Rebellion Pack DLC includes new characters, new maps – Firebase Jade, Firebase Goddess; and new weapons – Cerberus Harrier Assault Rifle, Reegar Carbine Shotgun, and the Krysae Sniper Rifle.
The DLC is available at no cost to owners.

Konami Corp. this week released the trailer for Metal Gear Solid Rising: Revengeance.
The new trailer details the high-octane action to be found in the final game, due out in 2013.
Developed by Platinum Games, the action title will feature Raiden in spectacular battles between soldiers and machines.
The title is set nine years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4, with Raiden still suffering from the wounds of war.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment said it will release Guardians of Middle-earth this fall.
Developed by Monolith Productions, the multiplayer online battle arena title will include up to ten players in five versus five competitive multiplayer action.
The title will feature more than 20 guardians including Gandalf, Sauron, Gollum, and Thráin.
The final game will tie into the film ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ and include an in-game voice communication system and online stat and leaderboard system.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment this week said it will release Injustice: Gods Among Us to Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3, Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo Co.’s Wii U in 2013.
Developed by NetherRealm Studios, Injustice: Gods Among U is a new fighting franchise that includes a large cast of DC Comics icons, including Batman, Harley Quinn, Solomon Grundy, Superman, The Flash, Wonder Woman, and more.
The final game is said to include fast-paced action with heroes and villains in epic battles in a massive scale.
Atlus Inc. this week said it will release the Dark Souls: Atorias of the Abyss DLC this winter.
The Dark Souls: Atorias of the Abyss DLC is said to include new maps, environments, new boss characters, enemies, NPCs, and new weapons and armor.
EA Inc. this week confirmed the release of the Battlefield 3 Premium membership.
Battlefield 3 Premium, to be sold June 4, will include five themed expansion packs, early access to all future expansion packs, unique in-game items, the ability to reset stats, queue priority into servers, and new decals for a one-time fee of $49.99.
In addition, the service will offer members-only events, strategy guides, and videos from DICE.

Mario Party 9 ranked as the No. 5 best-selling software for the week, selling 20,820 units in its fourth week at retail.
Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Nintendo 3DS held at No. 1 in Japan in the latest retail data from the region.
Media Create Co. this week said the Nintendo 3DS sold 55,212 units between May 21 and May 27 to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the week.
The hardware sold 45,752 the week prior.
The 3DS ranked three titles in top 10, including Mario Tennis Open at No. 2, Fire Emblem: Awakening at No. 7, and Super Mario 3D Land at No. 10.
Meanwhile, the Nintendo DSi LL sold 628 units and the Nintendo DSi sold 431 units for the week.
