Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 held as the second best-selling hardware in the latest Japan retail activity.

Media Create Co. this week reported the PS3 sold 16,390 units between Apr. 16 and Apr. 22 to rank No. 2 in overall hardware sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 17,765 to rank third the week prior.

The hardware did not rank any titles in the top 10 for the week.

Sony Corp. this week announced Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale for the Playstation 3.

The four-player fighter will feature trademark characters from Playstation franchises, including Parappa the Rapper, Kratos from God of War, Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal, Col. Radec from Killzone, and Fat Princess.

The title is in development at SuperBot Entertainment. The final game will include two vs. two and four-player matches, in addition to a single-player mode.

Sony this week announced the deployment of version 1.65 to the Playstation Home division of the Playstation 3.

The client update includes a new simplified menu screen, furniture slot memory adjustments, Voice Chat system, improved alerts, ability to shop from Wardrobe, an expanded Cross Game Invite System, improved stability of real-time games, and more.

In addition, a new Island Bungalow personal space is now available.

Sony this week said it will release the Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception Game of the Year Edition SKU to the Playstation 3.

The Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception Game of the Year Edition will include all 14 pieces of previously released DLC, like Classic Skins Pack, Multiplayer Accessory Pack, Flashback Maps 1 and 2, Drake’s Deception Map Pack, The Fort Co-Op, Co-Op Shade Survival, Doughnut Skin Pack, and Rogues Skin Pack 1 and 2.

Price and release date are to be determined.

Retailer Amazon.com Inc. this week began offering new pre-order bonus incentives for Take Two Interactive Inc.’s Max Payne 3.

Customers who pre-order the Max Payne 3 PS3, Xbox 360 or PC SKU will receive a $10 Bonus Credit and Deadly Force Burst, which offers higher damage bullets in multiplayer.

Capcom Co. this week released the demo of Dragon’s Dogma.

The demo includes two character classes, including the melee specialist Fighter and the nimble Strider in two challenges.

In addition, users can create a custom character and Main Pawn that can be transferred to the full game.

Retailer Amazon.com Inc. this week discounted pre-order sales for Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Inc.’s Lollipop Chainsaw in a new initiative.

This week, the Lollipop Chainsaw PS3 and Xbox 360 SKU hold a pre-sale price of $44.99, 25 percent off the $59.99 MSRP.

EA Inc. this week released the gameplay trailer for Crysis 3.

The trailer includes a brief story overview of the current state of New York followed by in-game footage of shooting, stealth tactics, and melee capability in an urban jungle.

Sony Corp. this week released the Story Trailer for Starhawk for the Playstation 3.

The trailer includes lead character Emmett Graves as a rift energy salvager who runs into conflict with the Outcasts, a band of mutated rift hoarders. It features land, vehicular, and space combat.

Starhawk, to be sold May 8, will include a single-player campaign and online multiplayer functionality.

SNK Playmore USA Corp. this week released Ikari III: The Rescue to the Playstation Network division of the Playstation 3.

Ikari III: The Rescue is the third installment in the Ikari Warriors franchise and released as part of the retro-arcade-emulation project to re-release SNK arcade classics from the 1980′s.

Sales for the Playstation Vita dropped to near 8,000 units in the latest Japan retail figures.

The PS Vita sold 8,206 units between Apr. 16 and Apr. 22 to rank as the No. 4 hardware for the week.

By comparison, the hardware sold 8,250 the week prior.

The hardware did not rank any titles in the top 10 for the week.

Meanwhile, the PSP sold 11,779 units to rank third in the same period.

The hardware ranked one title in the top 10, Bandai Namco Games Inc.’s 2nd Super Robot Wars Z at No. 4.

Sales for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 hardware stayed cold in the latest Japan retail figures.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Xbox 360 sold 1,282 units between Apr. 16 and Apr. 22 to rank No. 6 in overall sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 1,373 units the week prior.

Microsoft will announce a new music service dubbed Woodstock for the Xbox 360 and platforms, according to a new report.

The Verge this week claims the Woodstock service will hold cross-platform functionality between the Xbox 360, Windows 8, Google Inc.’s Android and Apple Inc.’s iOS.

The service is said to offer integration with Facebook and the ability to scan and match a current user’s music library.

Tecmo Koei Holdings Co. this week announced two new fighters for Dead or Alive 5.

The next installment in the fighting franchise will include the return of British female assassin Christie and soldier Bayman.


Retailer Amazon.com Inc. price cut pre-order sales for Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment this week LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes by 25 percent.

This week, the LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes PS3 and Xbox 360 hold a pre-order price of $37.49 each, 25 percent off the $49.99 MSRP.

Developed by Travelers Tales, LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes will include Batman and Robin as they join DC Super Heroes like Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern to stop the Joker and Lex Luthor from taking over Gotham City.

Retailer Amazon.com Inc. this week began offering a new pre-order bonus for Capcom Co.’s Steel Battalion Heavy Armor for Microsoft Corp.’s Kinect for the Xbox 360.

Customers who pre-order Steel Battalion will receive the Carbon Assassin Armory, which includes the Savannah Armor and Storm Armor for in-game use.

Steel Battalion Heavy Armor, to be sold June 19, is war combat title in which users pilot a Vertical Tank in a global war.

Activision Blizzard Inc. may release Call of Duty: Black Ops II for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 in Nov. according to reservation cards to be sold at Target Corp. stores.

IGN this week reported reservation cards for the title to be sold at Target disclaim a Nov. 13 release date for the sequel.

EA Inc. this week released the Battlefield 3: Close Quarters Donya Fortress Trailer.

The new trailer features outdoor and indoor warfare in tightly constructed spaces.

The Close Quarters DLC will include four new multiplayer maps with tight and vertical construction.

Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii hardware hovered at 7,000 units in latest retail data from Japan.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Wii sold 7,025 units between Apr. 16 and Apr. 22 to rank No. 5 in overall sales.

By comparison, the Wii sold 6,837 units the week prior.

The hardware did not rank any titles in the top 10 game sales.

Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Nintendo 3DS climbed in Japan in the latest retail data from the region.

Media Create Co. this week said the Nintendo 3DS sold 84,760 units between Apr. 16 and Apr. 22 to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the week.

The hardware sold 63,796 the week prior.

The 3DS ranked eight titles in the top 10 for the week, including Fire Emblem: Awakening at No. 1, Code of Princess at No. 2, Super Mario 3D Land at No. 3, Kid Icarus: Uprising at No. 7.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo DSi LL sold 760 units and the Nintendo DSi sold 516 units for the week.

Nintendo this week recorded a $460 million loss for the fiscal year amid lower-than-expected sales of the Nintendo 3DS handheld and the Wii console.

For the 2011 fiscal year ended Mar. 31, the company held an operating loss of $461.2 million.

In the year it sold 9.8 million Wii consoles, down from an estimate of 13 million, and 13.5 million Nintendo 3DS handhelds, down from a target of 16 million.

It shipped about five million Nintendo DS units.


Nintendo this week said it will sell titles for the Wii U console and the Nintendo 3DS handheld in both physical and digital formats.

Key titles, including New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Nintendo 3DS, will be sold in a physical SKU and digital SKU available for download at the Nintendo eShop store.

In addition, it will sell retail stores game codes at wholesale to allow consumers to purchase download codes in-store and grant retailers the option to mark down the download code in a sale initiative.

A leaked trailer for Ubisoft Inc.’s Rayman Legends for the Wii U demonstrates NFC technology built in to the tablet controller.

In the trailer, a user places a toy figurine on the Wii U tablet controller which transports the character into the game.

Nintendo in Jan. said the Wii U hardware will utilize NFC (near-field communication) technology to connect physical objects to games and facilitate micropayments.

Skype this week announced the availability of the Skype app for the Playstation Vita.

The Skype app allows PS Vita users to facilitate free voice and video calls via Skype. The application runs in background mode to allow users to pause a game, conduct a call, then return to the previous activity.
