Skype this week announced the availability of the Skype app for Sony Corp.’s Playstation Vita handheld.

The Skype app allows PS Vita users to facilitate free voice and video calls via Skype. The application runs in background mode to allow users to pause a game, conduct a call, then return to the previous activity.

In addition, the Skype app utilizes the front and rear cameras to offer face-to-face video calls and allow users to show the image from the rear camera.

Calls to mobile and landline phones require Skype credit.

The PS Vita is sold in a Wi-Fi SKU at $249.99 and a 3G SKU at $299.99.

It includes dual analog sticks, a 5-inch multi-touch OLED display, 3G & GPS, front and rear touch panels, and a compass on three axes. It will utilize flash-memory game cards.
