Retailer GameStop Corp. this week began offering a free game with the purchase of Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 or Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 in a new hardware initiative.

In the new offer, customers who purchase the PS3 160GB SKU, Xbox 360 4GB, Xbox 360 250GB or Xbox 360 250GB Kinect Bundle will receive a copy of Batman: Arkham City or Mortal Kombat Komplete Collection at no additional cost.

The retailer is concurrently selling the PS3 160GB at $199.99, $50 off the $249.99 MSRP.

NPD Group Inc. this month said video game sales fell 25 percent from one year prior to $1.1 billion from $1.47 billion in Mar.

Hardware sales declined 35 percent to $325.5 million, non-PC software sales fell 25 percent to $553.1 million, and accessories dipped eight percent to $222.5 million.
