Capcom Co.’s Devil May Cry HD Collection for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 is a solid compilation that packs three Devil May Cry titles in a action-packed demonic bash.
Devil May Cry HD Collection includes Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2, and Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening. All three titles have been remastered in high-definition to carve a sharpened new luster to each entry in the franchise.
Devil May Cry, released in 2001, combines action and exploration elements in a gothic castle setting. Battles are strategic with mad marionettes blocking and evading strikes. Dante must utilize a combination of dual-wield handguns and sword combat to receive a top battle grade in each mission.
Devil May Cry 2, released in 2003, is a weaker entry in the series that ditches the exploration elements in favor of repeated combat. While the game includes expansive environments, the title doesn’t include much strategy as the entire game can be cleared with the use of only handguns and auto-aim.
Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening, released in 2005, is a prequel that introduces more in-depth combat against a slew of clever enemies. The entry is the most difficult with a barrage of demons, however, the title includes multiple combat styles that can be level-upgraded for full customization. The version in the HD Collection includes the option to play as Virgil in addition to Bloody Palace Mode and Turbo Mode.
Each entry included in the HD Collection offers a distinct experience that offers hours of combat gameplay. Controls are solid in each entry and offer a mix of shooting and slashing combat against a myriad of possessed enemies.
The graphics engine is solid at 60 frames-per-second. Each installment has never looked better with sharp visuals to match the tight combat gameplay. Sound effects and music are direct from prior entries with a rock soundtrack that blares in each combat scenario.
Devil May Cry HD Collection is a solid collection for franchise and action fans. Armed with new graphics, Dante is still a top action character with plenty of fight left.
