Retailer Target Corp. this week began holding a new Buy 2 Get 1 Free video game sale that discounts select software titles for one week.
Through Mar. 31, customers who purchase any two video game titles will receive a third at equal or lesser value at no cost.
Meanwhile, Amazon.com Inc. this week is holding a Buy 2 Get 1 Free for all game platforms.
Eligible titles include Mass Effect 3, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, and Just Dance 3.
NPD Group Inc. in Mar. said video game sales totaled $1.06 billion, a 20 percent decline from the year prior.
Hardware sales totaled $381.4 million, a decline of 18 percent in year-over-year figures.
Software sales totaled $464.4 million, a decline of 23 percent from the year prior.
Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 sold 426,000 units to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the month in figures provided by NPD Group Inc.
The ranking marks the 14th consecutive month the Xbox 360 has ranked as the No. 1 hardware in the states. In addition, the hardware held 42 percent share of total next-generation console sales.
