The Nielsen Company this week said more than half of U.S. households own a next-generation system.

Next-generation consoles include Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3, Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360, Nintendo Co.’s Wii.

In addition, 39 percent of U.S. households own a device with Apple Inc.’s iOS.

Time spent gaming increased seven percent, with tablet and mobile gaming leading sector increases. Time spent gaming on Wii declined 22 percent.

Game titles are more likely to be purchased online, particularly PS3 and Xbox 360 titles.

Finally, share of console time spent streaming video content gained across all platforms in 2011.
