Media Create Co. this week reported a sales decline for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 in the latest Japan retail activity.

The PS3 sold 22,924 units between Jan. 23 to Jan. 29 to rank No. 2 in overall hardware sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 21,155 to rank third the week prior.

The hardware ranked two titles in the top 10, including From Software’s Armored Core V at No. 1 and Bandai Namco Games Inc.’s The Idolmaster: Gravure For You! Vol. 4 at No 8.

Sony this week recorded a $2.1 billion loss due in part to costs associated with the Playstation business in the third quarter.

The company this week posted a $2.1 billion loss, down from a $950.5 million profit one year prior.

The Consumer Products and Services division, which includes the Playstation business, recorded revenue of $13.1 billion, down from $17.3 billion one year ago.

Sony blamed the Aug. 2011 price cut for the Playstation 3 and high marketing costs for network service platforms for the loss in the division.

Despite the loss, the company sold 6.5 million PS3 units, an increase of 200,000 units one year prior. PS3 software sales totaled 66.5 million units, an increase from 57.6 million units one year ago.

PSP sales declined to 2.4 million units, down 800,000 units from the year prior. Playstation 2 sales fell to 2.1 million units, down 1.2 million units from one year ago.

Sony this week said Kazuo Hirai has been appointed as President and Chief Executive Officer.

Hirai replaces current president and CEO Sir Howard Stringer who will become Chairman of the Board of Directors in June 2012.

Twisted Metal for the Playstation 3 ranked in the top three pre-order sales at Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s online division pending release of the title this month.

This week, Twisted Metal ranked as the No. 3 best-selling pre-order video game product at

Twisted Metal, to be released Feb. 14, will include new vehicles and levels in the franchise.

Atlus Inc. this week released the online patch for SNK Playmore Corp. to help improve online network code The King of Fighters XIII for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3.

The online match includes Ranked Match Filtering, Improved Filtering, Improved Connection Antenna, Temporarily Saved Custom Match Settings, Character-Specific Bug Fixes, and additional refinements.

Sony this week released a new wave of content to the Playstation Network division of the Playstation 3.

New PSN Games include Puddle at $9.99, and new Full PS3 Games include Madden NFL 12 at $29.99, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days at $19.99, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men at $14.99, and Mini Ninjas at $19.99.

New Game Demos include the Twisted Metal Multiplayer Demo, Syndicate Co-Op Demo, and Puddle Demo.

New PSP Downloadable Games include Naruto Shippuden: UN Impact at $39.99.

Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation Vita climbed above the PSP in the latest Japan retail figures.

The PS Vita sold 18,942 units between Jan. 23 and Jan. 29 to rank as the No. 4 hardware for the week.

By comparison, the hardware sold 15,219 the week prior.

The hardware did not rank any titles in the top 10.

Meanwhile, the PSP sold 16,008 units to rank third in the same period.

Sales for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 hardware fell in the latest Japan retail figures.

The Playstation Vita 3G / Wi-Fi SKU ranked in the top 10 pre-order sales at Inc. this week post a new sales initiative to offer $55 in bonus content with the hardware.

This week, the PS Vita 3G / Wi-Fi SKU ranked as the No. 10 best-selling product at Amazon’s Video Games division.

This week, customers who pre-order the PS Vita 3G / Wi-Fi SKU will receive $55 in bonus content, including an 8GB Memory Card, DataConnect Session Pass and a Playstation Network game.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Xbox 360 sold 1,235 units between Jan. 23 and Jan. 29 to rank No. 6 in overall sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 1,588 units the week prior.

The hardware did not rank any titles in the top 10 game sales for the week.

Retailer Inc. this week price cut Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 320GB Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Bundle and the Xbox 360 320G Gears of War 3 Bundle to under $350 in a new hardware sale.

This week, the Xbox 360 320GB Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Bundle holds a discount price of $349.99, down from the $399.99 MSRP.

Pre-order sales for Capcom Co.’s Resident Evil 6 ranked in the top 10 at Best Buy Co. Inc.’s online division due to building demand.

Resident Evil 6, to be sold Nov. 20, will feature a single-player and co-op campaign mode to include Leon S. Kennedy and Chris Redfield, in addition to new characters in a dramatic global horror crisis.

Capcom Co. this week said it will release Dragon’s Dogma May 22 in the U.S. and May 25 in Europe.

Dragon’s Dogma is a new action title that includes combat in a large, open world.

The final game includes three interactive AI partners called Pawns that build ability dependant on player actions. Users can share Pawns with friends online and borrow Pawns to utilize specific skills for a particular task.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Inc. this week detailed pre-order incentives for Lollipop Chainsaw for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360.

Customers who pre-order the title at Inc. will include Juliet to the pinup collection and Rockability functionality to pop cherries.

Customers who pre-order at Best Buy Co. Inc. will receive a Goth Girl outfit and Foxy Funk outfit.

Finally, customers who pre-order at GameStop Corp. will receive the character Ash from the Evil Dead series.

Developed by SUDA 51, Lollipop Chainsaw is a zombie-hunting action title in which users take a killer chainsaw while balancing high school drama.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Inc. this week said Gotham City Imposters for Sony Corp.’s Playstation Network, Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox Live will be available next week.

The title will be available Feb. 7 in the PSN division and Feb. 8 in the Xbox Live division.

Gotham City Imposters, to be sold in Feb., is a download-only first-person shooter that allows up to 12 players to battle Imposters inspired by DC Comics characters.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Inc. this month said it will release The Witcher 2: Assassin’s of Kings Enhanced Edition to Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 and PC.

The Enhanced Edition will include an original soundtrack audio CD, world map, and quest handbook at no additional cost.

In addition, the Dark Edition will add the Making-Of-DVD, The Witcher Medallion, Artbook, Stickers, and Dark Edition Box.

Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii hardware ranked fifth in Japan in the latest retail data for the region.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Wii sold 10,396 units between Jan. 23 to Jan. 29 to rank No. 5 in overall sales.

By comparison, the Wii sold 10,173 units the week prior.

The hardware did not rank any titles in the top 10 for the week.

Nintendo Co.’s Nintendo 3DS held the top hardware sales rank in the latest retail data from the region.

Media Create Co. this week said the Nintendo 3DS sold 84,789 units between Jan. 23 and Jan. 29 to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the week.

The 3DS ranked six titles in the top 10 for the week, including Capcom Co.’s Resident Evil: Revelations at No. 1, Mario Kart 7 at No. 4, Capcom Co.’s Monster Hunter Tri G at No. 5, Super Mario 3D Land at No. 7, Rhythm Thief & The Emperor’s Treasure at No. 9, and Inazuna Eleven Go: Shine / Dark at No. 10.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo DSi LL sold 1,180 units and the Nintendo DSi sold 738 units for the week.

Nintendo this month said it will launch the Nintendo Network online service for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

The Nintendo Network will offer downloadable DLC, digital games, and a personal account login system.

Mario Kart 7 for the Nintendo 3DS will be the first title to receive download content.

Nintendo this week said it will release the Nintendo 3DS Pearl Pink SKU Feb. 10 at $169.99.

The release of the stand-alone hardware will launch in time for Valentine’s Day.

Technology News

Facebook Inc. this week announced plans for filed to raise $5 billion in an initial public offering with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The company, founded in 2004, recorded revenue of $3.7 billion from advertising, operating income of $1.75 billion, and $1 billion in net income in 2011. Advertising accounted for 85 percent of the company’s revenue.

Research firm Canalys this week said Apple Inc. lead global PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2011.

The firm, which included sales of tablets in the study, said Apple shipped 15 million iPads and five million Macs to hold a 17 percent share of the 120 million PCs shipped in the quarter.

HP Inc. ranked second, Lenovo ranked third, Dell No. 4, and Acer Inc. ranked No. 5 in global share. Inc. sold six million units of the Kindle Fire tablets in the fourth quarter according to new analyst estimate.

Forbes this week reported a Stifel Nicholas analyst lifted a sales estimate for the Kindle Fire from five million units to six million units sold in Q4.

Research firm Strategy Analytics this month said Android held a 39.1 percent market share in global tablet shipments in Q4, an increase from 29 percent from the year prior.

Sling Media Inc., a subsidiary of EchoStar Corp. this week released the SlingPlayer application to Inc.’s Kindle Fire.

SlingPlayer for Kindle Fire allows users to stream live television to their Kindle Fire tablet from a TV-connected Slingbox Solo or Slingbox Pro-HD device.

Capcom Co. this week released Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective to Apple Inc.’s App Store for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective for iOS is a puzzle title that includes touch-based puzzle solving by manipulating inanimate objects.
