Media Create Co. this week reported a sales decline for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 in the latest Japan retail activity.
The PS3 sold 22,924 units between Jan. 23 to Jan. 29 to rank No. 2 in overall hardware sales.
By comparison, the hardware sold 21,155 to rank third the week prior.
The hardware ranked two titles in the top 10, including From Software’s Armored Core V at No. 1 and Bandai Namco Games Inc.’s The Idolmaster: Gravure For You! Vol. 4 at No 8.
Sony this week recorded a $2.1 billion loss due in part to costs associated with the Playstation business in the third quarter.
The company this week posted a $2.1 billion loss, down from a $950.5 million profit one year prior.
The Consumer Products and Services division, which includes the Playstation business, recorded revenue of $13.1 billion, down from $17.3 billion one year ago.
Sony blamed the Aug. 2011 price cut for the Playstation 3 and high marketing costs for network service platforms for the loss in the division.
Despite the loss, the company sold 6.5 million PS3 units, an increase of 200,000 units one year prior. PS3 software sales totaled 66.5 million units, an increase from 57.6 million units one year ago.
PSP sales declined to 2.4 million units, down 800,000 units from the year prior. Playstation 2 sales fell to 2.1 million units, down 1.2 million units from one year ago.
Sony this week said Kazuo Hirai has been appointed as President and Chief Executive Officer.
Hirai replaces current president and CEO Sir Howard Stringer who will become Chairman of the Board of Directors in June 2012.
Twisted Metal for the Playstation 3 ranked in the top three pre-order sales at Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s online division pending release of the title this month.

Twisted Metal, to be released Feb. 14, will include new vehicles and levels in the franchise.

The online match includes Ranked Match Filtering, Improved Filtering, Improved Connection Antenna, Temporarily Saved Custom Match Settings, Character-Specific Bug Fixes, and additional refinements.
Sony this week released a new wave of content to the Playstation Network division of the Playstation 3.
New PSN Games include Puddle at $9.99, and new Full PS3 Games include Madden NFL 12 at $29.99, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days at $19.99, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men at $14.99, and Mini Ninjas at $19.99.
New Game Demos include the Twisted Metal Multiplayer Demo, Syndicate Co-Op Demo, and Puddle Demo.

By comparison, the hardware sold 15,219 the week prior.
The hardware did not rank any titles in the top 10.
Meanwhile, the PSP sold 16,008 units to rank third in the same period.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Inc. this week detailed pre-order incentives for Lollipop Chainsaw for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360.
Customers who pre-order the title at Amazon.com Inc. will include Juliet to the pinup collection and Rockability functionality to pop cherries.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Inc. this week said Gotham City Imposters for Sony Corp.’s Playstation Network, Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox Live will be available next week.
The title will be available Feb. 7 in the PSN division and Feb. 8 in the Xbox Live division.
Gotham City Imposters, to be sold in Feb., is a download-only first-person shooter that allows up to 12 players to battle Imposters inspired by DC Comics characters.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Inc. this month said it will release The Witcher 2: Assassin’s of Kings Enhanced Edition to Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 and PC.
The Enhanced Edition will include an original soundtrack audio CD, world map, and quest handbook at no additional cost.
In addition, the Dark Edition will add the Making-Of-DVD, The Witcher Medallion, Artbook, Stickers, and Dark Edition Box.
Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii hardware ranked fifth in Japan in the latest retail data for the region.

Nintendo Co.’s Nintendo 3DS held the top hardware sales rank in the latest retail data from the region.
Media Create Co. this week said the Nintendo 3DS sold 84,789 units between Jan. 23 and Jan. 29 to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the week.
The 3DS ranked six titles in the top 10 for the week, including Capcom Co.’s Resident Evil: Revelations at No. 1, Mario Kart 7 at No. 4, Capcom Co.’s Monster Hunter Tri G at No. 5, Super Mario 3D Land at No. 7, Rhythm Thief & The Emperor’s Treasure at No. 9, and Inazuna Eleven Go: Shine / Dark at No. 10.
