Media Create Co. this week reported solid sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 in the latest Japan retail activity.

The PS3 sold 30,332 units between Jan. 9 to Jan. 15 to rank No. 2 in overall hardware sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 74,459 to rank third the week prior.

The hardware ranked two titles in the top 10, including Koei Tecmo Corp.’s Warriors Orochi 2 at No. 6 and Square Enix Holdings Co.’s Final Fantasy XIII-2 at No. 8.

Capcom Co. this week said Resident Evil 6 will be released to Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 Nov. 20, 2012.

A PC SKU will be sold after the console release.

Resident Evil 6 will feature a single-player and co-op campaign mode to include Leon S. Kennedy and Chris Redfield, in addition to new characters in a dramatic global horror crisis.

The official Resident Evil Twitter Account this week said Resident Evil will include an overhauled control system that will feature a number of new gameplay elements.

In addition, the control system is said to be intuitive to the gameplay experience.

Sony this week updated the Playstation Home division of the Playstation with new spaces, quests, and music.

New spaces include Gothic Manor personal space and the Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten game space.

The Activity Board is updated with two new quests this week – the Home Memories Tour to unlock the 2012 Home Active Calendar and the Chinese New Year celebration activity to unlock the dragon companion.

New boom boxes include music from El-P and NYC-based rap label Duck Down Records.

Finally, new Silent Hill HD downloads are now available, including James Sunderland and Heather Mason costumes.

Sony Corp. this week said the Starhawk for the Playstation 3 will be sold May 8 in the U.S.

In addition, the Public Beta is now available to Playstation Plus subscribers and Private Beta participants.

The Public Beta adds the Classic Arcade Flight Mode, Host Migration, Language Support, Skills, and Bug Fixes to the Private Beta.

The Public Beta will be accessible to select Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception owners with voucher Jan. 21 and available to all Playstation Network members Feb. 21.

Starhawk, the sequel to Warhawk, will include a single-player campaign and online multiplayer functionality.

Twisted Metal for the Playstation 3 ranked in the top 40 pre-order sales at Inc. this week amid building demand for the racing combat title.

Twisted Metal, to be released Feb. 14, will include new vehicles and levels in the franchise.

The final game will include 16-player competitive online multiplayer functionality.

Sony this week released four new multiplayer maps for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception for the Playstation 3.

The new multiplayer maps – Cave, Fort, Lost City, and Sanctuary – are available in a download pack for Fortune Hunters’ Club members.

The Fortune Hunters’ Club will offer a total of 14 download packs at $24.99.

Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation Vita fell below the PSP in the latest Japan retail figures.

The PS Vita sold 18,361 units between Jan. 9 and Jan. 15 to rank as the No. 4 hardware for the week.

By comparison, the hardware sold 42,815 the week prior.

The hardware did not rank any titles in the top 10.

Meanwhile, the PSP sold 22,538 units to rank third in the same period.

Sony this week said there is a market for a gaming handheld like the Playstation Vita despite competition from phone and tablet-based gaming devices.

Sony Computer Entertainment, President and CEO, Andrew House this week told the Playstation Blog that there is a market for a dedicated gaming device, and referenced strong sales of Nintendo Co.’s Nintendo 3DS as a retail indicator.

Sony Corp. this week demonstrated Uncharted: Golden Abyss for the Playstation Vita at the PS Vita Social Club media event in Los Angeles.

The preview build included the new Intu-Aim feature that allows users to utilize the hardware gyroscope to adjust the PS Vita and pinpoint enemy aim.

The feature worked well, with the right analog used to direct the crosshair in enemy space then subsequently utilizing Intu-Aim to direct an exact shot.

The Wipeout 2048 preview build included an anti-gravity course with eight racers speeding over power-up arrows to fire weapons or activate shields.

Users utilize the X button to accelerate and square button to brake. Vehicle control was consistent at high and moderate speeds.

The final game will include touch functionality to fire weapons and accelerate. In addition, the title will offer cross-platform online multiplayer against Wipeout HD PS3 owners.

The Touch My Katamari preview build included a complete touch experience in which users can control the entire game with the main touch screen by swiping up to roll the katamari and swiping in opposite directions with each thumb simultaneously to turn left or right.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment this week said Mortal Kombat for the Playstation Vita will be sold in spring 2012.

Developed by NetherRealm Studios, the title is said to build upon the 2011 release with original game content and new features.

Atlus Inc. this week said it will release Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time to the PSP this summer in the U.S.

The title is an expanded and remastered release of the strategy RPG classic to be sold at retail and as a downloadable title via the Playstation Network division.

Released in Japan as Growlanser IV: Over Reloaded, Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time is the fourth chapter in the Growlanser franchise. It includes new characters, scenarios, and events, faster load times, and a 40-plus hour campaign with more than 40 possible endings.

Sales for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 hardware fell in the latest Japan retail figures.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Xbox 360 sold 1,519 units between Jan. 9 and Jan. 15 to rank No. 6 in overall sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 2,738 units the week prior.

The hardware did not rank any titles in the top 10 game sales for the week.

Microsoft this week said the Entertainment and Devices, which includes the Xbox business, held a 15 percent increase in second quarter earnings.

The division held revenue of $4.24 billion, a 15 percent increase from the year prior.

Xbox Live paid subscribers increased 33 percent to total 40 million members.

In the past fiscal year, 8.2 million Xbox 360 units were sold. The hardware has sold 66 million units worldwide to date.

Bioware Inc. and EA Inc. this week released the Mass Effect 3 ‘Better with Kinect’ trailer to demonstrated gesture and voice technology.

Voice technology will allow users to attack, switch weapons, examine, activate, and command ally characters.

Microsoft this month said the Xbox Live House Party game download initiative for the Xbox 360 will begin Feb. 15.

The Xbox Live House Party will offer four brand new download titles to Xbox Live members.

Download titles include Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, Ubisoft Inc.’s I Am Alive, THQ Inc.’s Nexuiz, and EA Inc.’s Warp.

Under the initiative, a new title will be released each week for four consecutive weeks.

2K Games, a division of Take Two Interactive Inc., this week said Bioshock Infinite will include a new 1999 Mode.

1999 Mode is said to offer a challenging form of play for veteran users, including demanding weapon, power, and health management and a direct ‘Game Over’ screen if the user lacks the resources to be brought back to life.

In addition, the mode will include permanent decisions that will include permanent consequences in the difficult mode.

Take Two Interactive Inc. this week said the title Max Payne 3 will be delayed to May.

The release is two months later than planned which may result in a loss for fiscal 2012, the publisher cautioned.

The title is now expected to enhance the company’s fiscal 2013 lineup.

Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii hardware ranked fifth in Japan in the latest retail data for the region.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Wii sold 14,179 units between Jan. 9 to Jan. 15 to rank No. 5 in overall sales.

By comparison, the Wii sold 49,525 units the week prior.

The hardware ranked one in the top 10, including Just Dance Wii at No. 10.

Nintendo Co.’s Nintendo 3DS held the top hardware sales rank in the latest retail data from the region.

Media Create Co. this week said the Nintendo 3DS sold 100,668 units between Jan. 9 and Jan. 15 to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the week.

The 3DS ranked five titles in the top 10 for the week, including Mario Kart 7 at No. 2, Capcom Co.’s Monster Hunter Tri G at No. 3, Super Mario 3D Land at No. 4, Inazuna Eleven Go: Shine / Dark at No. 5, and Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir at No. 7.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo DSi LL sold 1,515 units and the Nintendo DSi sold 1,206 units for the week.

Capcom Co. this week released the demo for Resident Evil: Revelations to the Nintendo eShop division of the Nintendo 3DS.

The download offers a preview of the latest chapter in the Resident Evil franchise.

Nintendo this week released new details for Kid Icarus: Uprising for the Nintendo 3DS.

The title will begin with the return of Medusa and her Underworld army. Pit must combat the evil army and Medusa in air and land battles.

A new system called the Fiend’s Cauldron will allow users to adjust the intensity level of the game by increments of .1 by betting a number of Hearts into the Fiend’s Cauldron. An increased intensity will earn more Hearts and more powerful weapon drops. If Hearts are bet and the player is defeated, some Hearts are lost and the intensity level falls.

Nintendo Co. this week said it will release Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir for the Nintendo 3DS in Apr.

The title will include a 16-page AR book to view the book through the lens of the Nintendo 3DS camera and offer insights into the mystery.

The final game will allow users to utilize the built-in camera to view Maya in their own surroundings.

Technology News

Apple Inc. this week released new education software for the Mac and iOS users to update education consumers into a digital world.

The new iBooks 2 app will sell new enhanced iBooks Textbooks at $14.99 or less. Texbooks will include interactive features like diagrams, photos, and videos. Initial publishing partners include McGraw-Hill, Pearson Education, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

In addition the app allows users to highlight, view 3D models, videos, and images, make flashcards, and look up words in a dictionary.

iTunes Author is a free app that allows any Mac user to create Mulit-Touch textbooks with interactive options and submit to the iBookstore for publication.

Finally, the iTunes U app allows educators to design and distribute courses with audio, video, books and other content for free to iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch owners.

EA Inc. this week announced an exclusive partnership with Katy Perry to develop multiple games in The Sims franchise.

Perry is said to work closely with The Sims studio to create accessories, clothing, hairstyles, furniture and props.

The first product in the partnership is The Sims 3 Showtime Katy Perry Collector’s Edition which includes the Showtime Expansion Pack, Ultimate Stage bonus venue, Katy Perry themed items, and exclusive poster.

It will be released Mar. 6.
