Sony Corp. this week said the Playstation Vita handheld has sold 500,000 units after three weeks of availability in Japan and Asia.

The company this week said the PS Vita has sold half a million units since launch on Dec. 17 in Japan and Dec. 23 in Asia.

The hardware was released concurrently with 24 software titles including Namco Bandai Games Inc.’s Ridge Racer, Everybody’s Golf 6, and Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

More than 70 titles are in development for the Japanese market.

Meanwhile, the PSP sold 1.6 million units in the holiday season.

The PS Vita will be sold Feb. 22 in the U.S.

The handheld will launch simultaneously in Europe, Canada and Latin America the same day.

The Wi-Fi SKU will sell at $249.99. The 3G model will sell at $299.99.

The PS Vita will include dual analog sticks, a 5-inch multi-touch OLED display, 3G & GPS, front and rear touch panels, and a compass on three axes. It will utilize flash-memory game cards.

The hardware will launch with 25 first-party and third-party titles, including Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and EA Sports FIFA Soccer.
