Nintendo Co. this week said it sold 4.5 million units of the Wii console in the U.S. in 2011.

The 4.5 million sold brings the Wii global install base to 51 million units.

In addition, Mario Kart Wii has passed 11 million units sold and New Super Mario Bros. Wii has sold more than 10 million units.

Nintendo in Dec. said The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for Wii sold more than 600,000 units in its first week and held the biggest first-day sales in the franchise’s history.

Nintendo Co. in Oct. posted a $927 million loss in the first six months of the fiscal year amid slow sales for current products.

Wii sales declined to 3.35 million units from 4.97 million units one year ago.
