Nintendo Co.’s Wii U may offer an app store to allow owners to download new non-gaming software according to a new report.

The Daily this week reported the Wii U will include a broad category of downloadable applications that would run on the hardware or via the controller, which includes a 6.2-inch touchscreen.

The Wii U is scheduled to be released in 2012.

The Wii U controller allows users to transfer gameplay to the controller screen, or use the added screen to relay menu items.

Additionally features include Wii U controller web browsing and video call chat.

The hardware will be fully backwards compatible with the Wii.
