Media Create Co. this week said the Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 ranked fourth in hardware sales in the latest Japan retail activity.

The PS3 sold 44,661 units between Dec. 5 to Dec. 11 to rank No. 4 in overall hardware sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 40,668 to rank third the week prior.

The hardware ranked three titles in the top 10 sales, including Bethesda Softworks’ The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim at No. 4, Bandai Namco Games Inc.’s Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme Versus at No. 5 and Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi at No. 7.

Sony this week said it will hold firm on a fiscal year sales target of 15 million units for the Playstation 3 according to a new report.

Sony in Nov. said sales for the Playstation 3 increased 70 percent in year-over-year figures for the month of Nov.

PS3 hardware sales held a 70 percent increase, while software sales held a 30 percent increase from the year prior in Nov. U.S. figures.

Retailer Amazon.com Inc. this week discounted Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3D Display by $100 in a new promotion.

This week, customers can purchase the Playstation 3 3D Display at $399.99, $100 off the $499.99 MSRP.

The Playstation 3D Display is a 24-inch LED HD 3D display that includes built-in speakers, individual HD 3D in two-player mode, Playstation 3D Glasses and MotorStorm Apocalypse at $499.99.

Sony this month said it will release The Last of Us to the Playstation 3.

Developed by Naughty Dog Inc., The Last of Us is said to include survival and action elements amid abandoned cities decimated by a plague. Users will guide to survivors to journey across the U.S.

Capcom Co. this week said Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City will include a new Heroes Mode.

Heroes Mode is a four vs. four online competitive multiplayer mode with classic Resident Evil characters, including Leon S. Kennedy, Jill Valentine, Hunk, and Ada Wong.

The mode requires players to defeat the opposing team in addition to zombies and B.O.W. enemies.

Media Create Co. this week said the PSP sold 51,191 units for the week to rank at No. 2 in Japan.

The PSP did not rank any titles in the top 10.

Sony this week said Uncharted: Golden Abyss for the Playstation Vita will include a new Intu-Aim feature that utilizes the built-in gyroscope.

Intu-Aim is said to allow the user to aim and shoot in 3D-space through movement of the PS Vita hardware.

Tecmo Koei America Corp. this month said it will release Dynasty Warriors Next to Sony Corp.’s Playstation Vita at launch.

Dynasty Warriors Next, to be sold Feb. 22, is a brand-new installment in the franchise that will include touch pad, rear touch pad, and motion sensor controls to fight battles.

Additional features include the Speed Musou to touch or shake to hit enemies with powerful attacks, and the ability to touch the map directly to direct subordinates.

The final game will include more than 65 playable characters.

Capcom Co. this week said Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for Sony Corp.’s Playstation Vita will include new features not found in the console release.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will include online and local multiplayer, touchscreen functionality, and near social functionality.

In addition, the PS Vita version will include a new Spectator Mode and Replay function to view or share matches via Wi-Fi.

Finally, owners can use the PS Vita as a controller to play the console version of the game.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will be sold as a launch title in Feb. 2012.

XSEED Games this week said it will release Sumioni: Demon Arts to Sony Corp.’s Playstation Vita in spring 2012.

Developed by Acquire Corp., Sumioni: Demon Arts is a 2D combat platform title that utilizes the PS Vita touchscreen to manipulate the game world.

The titles includes traditional controls in combination with the ability to paint brushstrokes across the screen to manipulate the game world in real-time.

The final game is said to include 30 stages and multiple endings.

Sony this week released the Playstation Vita in Japan.

The hardware includes dual analog sticks, a 5-inch multi-touch OLED display, 3G & GPS, front and rear touch panels, and a compass on three axes. It utilizes flash-memory game cards.

Sales for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 hardware increased in the latest Japan retail figures.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Xbox 360 sold 3,211 units between Dec. 5 and Dec. 11 to rank No. 6 in overall sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 1,660 units the week prior.

The hardware ranked one title in the top 10, Bethesda Softworks’ The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim at No. 9 with 37,037 units sold.

Activision Blizzard Inc.’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Bethesda Softworks’ The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 ranked as the top Xbox Live titles in the latest activity data.

This week, Microsoft said Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 ranked as the No. 1 Xbox Live title for the week of Dec. 5 based on unique users.

Call of Duty: Black Ops ranked second, The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim ranked third, and EA Inc.’s Battlefield 3 ranked at No. 4 in the same period.

Activision Blizzard this week said Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has surpassed $1 billion in retail sales.

The shooter, released Nov. 16, achieved the sales milestone in 16 days, one day faster than the feature film Avatar.

In addition, Call of Duty Elite has sold one million premium subscriptions to date. Premium features include daily competitions, download content and prizes.

NPD Group Inc. in Dec. reported Modern Warfare 3 ranked as the No. 1 game title across all platforms, with an estimated nine million copies sold.

Tecmo Koei America this week said Ninja Gaiden 3 will be released Mar. 20, 2012.


The title will be sold in a standard SKU at $59.99 and a Collector’s Edition at $99.99.

The Collector’s Edition the Ninja Gaiden Unmask game art book, soundtrack CD, Duel of the Masked figure, and four-character stage demo from Dead or Alive. It will be sold exclusively at GameStop Corp. and EB Games locations.

Customers who pre-order the standard SKU from Amazon.com Inc. or GameStop will receive a downloadable two-character stage demo from Dead or Alive 5.

Namco Bandai Games America Inc. this week said it will release Tekken Tag Tournament 2 in holiday 2012.

The sequel to Tekken Tag Tournament will include new features not found in the arcade version, including all-new options and online functionality.

Capcom Co. this week released the new DLC update to Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition.

The Version 2012 update includes rebalance moves for each of the 39 fighters.

The update will be available for the PC in the near future.

Activision Blizzard Inc. this week said it will release Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD to the Playstation Network division of Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 and the Xbox Live division of Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 in summer 2012.

Developed by Robomodo, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD is a digital download title that will include new high-definition graphics and online functionality.

It will retail at about $15.

Capcom Co. this week detailed the Gem System for Street Fighter X Tekken.

A total of 57 Gems (5 Assist and 52 Boost) area available. Each fighter can equip up to three gems that can boost speed, defense, strength, and assist properties.

Assist Gems offer helpful bonuses, while Boost Gems provide a stat increase in Attack, Defense, Speed, Cross Gauge, and Vitality.

Capcom Co. this week said it will release the Capcom Digital Collection to the Xbox 360 in spring 2012.

The compilation pack will include eight titles previously released on Xbox Live.

Titles include 1942: Joint Strike, Bionic Commando Rearmed 2, Final Fight Double Impact, Flock!, Rocketmen: Axis of Evil, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, and Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3.

The compilation will be sold at $39.99.

Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii hardware increased in Japan in the latest retail data for the region.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Wii sold 46,018 units between Dec. 5 to Dec. 11 to rank No. 3 in overall sales.

By comparison, the Wii sold 31,071 units the week prior.

The hardware ranked two titles in the top 10, including Kirby’s Return to Dreamland at No. 8 and Just Dance Wii at No. 10.

Nintendo Co. this week announced the software lineup for the Wii hardware in early 2012.

New titles include Rhythm Heaven Fever (Feb. 13), PokePark 2: Wonders Beyond (Feb. 27), and Mario Party 9 (Mar. 11).

Third-party titles include Country Dance Special Edition (Feb. 1), MLB 2K12 (Mar. 6) and Karaoke Joysound (Q1).

Media Create Co. this week said the Nintendo 3DS sold 350,321 units between Dec. 5 and Dec. 11 to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the week.

The 3DS ranked two titles in the top 10 for the week, including Mario Kart 7 at No. 1 with 423,619 copies sold and Super Mario 3D Land at No. 4 with 73,907 sold.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo DSi LL sold 4,007 units to rank No. 5, the Nintendo DSi sold 2,609 to rank No. 7, and the DS Lite sold 14 units to rank No. 8 in the same period.

Nintendo Co. this week announced the software lineup for the Nintendo 3DS handheld in early 2012.

New titles include Capcom Co.’s Resident Evil: Revelations (Feb. 6), Kid Icarus: Uprising (Mar. 23), and Konami Corp.’s Metal Gear Solid 3D Snake Eater (Q1).

In addition, Nintendo will release the optional Circle Pad Pro Feb. 7 to add an second analog stick to the hardware at GameStop Corp. retail stores and online division at $19.99.

New Nintendo eShop titles in Q1 include Dillion’s Rolling Western, Sakurai Samurai: Art of the Sword, VVVVV, Nightsky, Mighty Switch Force, and Mutant Mudds.

Apple Inc. will sell the iPad 3 in three to four months according to a new report by The DigiTimes.

The publication this week said next-generation iPad units will be available in the next three to four months as component suppliers have begun shipment of parts to OEM contractors.

Foxconn Electronics Inc. will reportedly begin manufacture the next iPads in Jan. according to The Commercial Times.

Production is estimated to reach 9.5 to 9.8 million units in the first quarter of 2012.

In addition, Apple Inc. may release a 7.85-inch iPad model by prior to the fourth quarter of 2012 according to The DigiTimes.

The publication this week said Apple will purchase 7.85-inch displays from LG Corp. and AU Optronics to begin production of a new iPad SKU Q2 of 2012.

Amazon.com Inc. will release a new software update to the Kindle Fire that will increase performance of the tablet according to a report by The New York Times.

The publication this week said the company will release an over-the-air update in two weeks that will improve performance, multi-touch navigation, and the ability to edit the list of recent programs.

Hewlett Packard Co. this week sold out of refurbished HP TouchPad units after the company placed stock of the item on its eBay store.

The sale, which was intended for employees before going public, leaked to consumers which resulted in an immediate sell-out of the in-demand item.

Remaining stock of the HP TouchPad was sold at clearance prices – $99 for the 16GB SKU and $149 for the 32GB SKU.

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. this week released the Galaxy Nexus smartphone with Google Inc.’s Ice Cream Sandwich OS to the Verizon Wireless network.

The Galaxy Nexus includes a 1.2Ghz Dual-Core CPU, 4.65-inch Super AMOLED display at 1280 x 720 resolution, 1GB RAM, 5MP camera with 1080p video recording, 1.3MP front-facing camera, barometer, and NFC technology.

The hardware is compatible with 4G LTE network for download speeds between 5 to 12 Mbps and upload speeds between 2 to 5 Mbps.

The smartphone sells at $299.99 with two-year contract.

Amazon.com Inc. this week said Battlefield 3 for the PC ranked as the top digital title of 2011 at the retailer.

Amazon.com Battlefield 3 ranked as the No. 1 best-selling Digital Title at the retailer for the year.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 ranked second, and Square Enix Holdings Co.’s Duex Ex: Human Revolution ranked third in the same period.
