Sony Corp. this week said sales for the Playstation 3 increased 70 percent in year-over-year figures for the month of Nov.

The company said PS3 hardware sales held a 70 percent increase, while software sales held a 30 percent increase from the year prior in Nov. U.S. figures.

The PS3 ranked second in overall game hardware sales for the month to move an estimated 900,000 units in the period.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception ranked in the top 10 game sales for Nov. in the U.S.

NPD Group Inc. this week reported the title ranked as the No. 7 best-selling game across all platforms in Nov., with an estimated 700,000 units sold.

Sony this week released a new update to the Playstation Home social division of the Playstation Network.

Playstation Home v1.60 includes a doubled Furniture Placemment Limit, Improved Targeting in Personal Spaces, Reactivating Portable Items and Companions, new Help System, No Timeout for Arcade Games placed as Furniture, and removal of the Community section for the Menu Pad.

Sony this week ranked the top 20 best-selling Playstation Network titles for the month of Nov. in the U.S.

Infamous Festival of Blood ranked as the No. 1 title for the month, followed by Payday: The Heist, and EA Inc.’s NBA Jam: On Fire Edition.

The Batman: Arkham City Nightwing Bundle was the top Playstation 3 Add-On, Chrono Cross was the No. 1 PSone Classic, and Corpse Party ranked as the top PSP download title in Nov.

Sony’s European game division this week said the company will focus to secure the younger demographic for the Playstation 3 as the hardware is further cost-reduced to the mass market.

SCEE CEO Jim Ryan told The Official Playstation Magazine UK this week the company will take the console towards a slightly younger demographic.

Sony this week released the Resistance 3 Co-Op Brutality Pack DLC for the Playstation 3.

The Resistance 3 Co-Op Brutality Pack DLC includes a new survival mode against an army of Grims in offline and online co-op.

In addition, the Brutality Pack includes the Mick Cutler skin, unlocked sledgehammer, and Warden Static PS3 Theme.

Media Create Co. this week said the Playstation 3 ranked second in hardware sales in the latest Japan retail activity.

The PS3 sold 40,668 units between Nov. 28 to Dec. 4 to rank No. 2 in overall hardware sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 34,031 to rank third the week prior.

The PSP sold 33,151 units for the week to rank at No. 3 in Japan.

The PSP ranked four titles in the top 10, including Sega Corp.’s 7th Dragon 2020 at No. 2.

The Playstation Vita First Edition Bundle ranked in the top 10 pre-order products at Best Buy Co. Inc.’s online division due to strong advanced demand.

Namco Bandai Games America Inc. this week released a new trailer for Touch My Katamari for the Playstation Vita.

The new trailer features new gameplay options including the ability to squeeze or stretch the Katamari using the rear touch panel of the PS Vita.

Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 ranked as the top-selling game hardware in Nov. U.S. sales.

NPD Group Inc. this week said the Xbox 360 sold 1.7 million units to rank as the No. 1 hardware in Nov to outsell all rival console and handheld products for the month.

Microsoft this week deployed the new Xbox 360 Dashboard Update which adds new features and functionality to the hardware.

The update includes new features like cloud storage for game saves and Xbox Live profiles, beacons and Facebook sharing, enhanced family settings, integrated Kinect voice and gesture controls, and Bing voice search.

Microsoft this week updated its terms of service agreement with Xbox 360 owners to bar the right to litigate against the company.

In the new Xbox 360 Dashboard Update, the terms of service disclaims that all disputes will be resolved before an arbitrator.

The terms also disallow the right to sue as part of a class action.

Users must agree to the terms in order to utilize the Xbox Live service.

Microsoft this week said Bing is now available for the Xbox 360 hardware to offer voice search functionality to owners.

Bing will offer voice search to access owner content, from movies, games, TV shows, apps and music with the Kinect sensor peripheral.

Voice search functions across various applications, including Netflix, Hulu Plus, Comcast Xfinity on Demand, HBO Go and Zune.

Atlus Inc. this week confirmed the development of a new patch to improve the net code for SNK Playmore Corp. to help improve online network code The King of Fighters XIII following user complaints.

The publisher said details and timing of the patch release will be available as soon as possible.

User complaints include input lag and lack of strong connections between players.

Tecmo Koei Holdings Co. this week released new details for Dead or Alive 5.

The next installment in the fighting franchise will include the return of veteran fighters Ayane and Hitomi.

Developer Team Ninja said the Dead or Alive 5 will include a wide variety of martial arts techniques that marry the individual personalities of each fighter.

Activision Blizzard Inc.’s for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 ranked as the top-selling video game title in Nov. in the latest U.S. retail figures.

NPD Group Inc. this week reported Modern Warfare 3 ranked as the No. 1 game title across all platforms, with an estimated nine million copies sold.

Bethesda Softworks’ The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim ranked as the No. 2 best-selling game title across all platforms in Nov.

EA Inc.’s Battlefield 3 ranked as the No. 3 best-selling title in the same period.

Sales for the Xbox 360 hardware held steady in the latest Japan retail figures.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Xbox 360 sold 1,660 units between Nov. 28 and Dec. 4 to rank No. 6 in overall sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 1,678 units the week prior.

Nintendo Co. this week said the U.S. install base of the Wii hardware totaled 37.7 million units after strong Nov. system sales in the U.S.

The company this week said the Wii sold more than 860,000 units in Nov., including 520,000 units on Black Friday.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword sold more than 600,000 units in its first week and held the biggest first-day sales in the franchise’s history.

Nintendo Co.’s Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii ranked as a top-selling pre-order title at GameStop Corp.’s online division due to high demand.

Nintendo Co. this week said the Nintendo 3DS has sold nearly 2.5 million units in the U.S.

The company said the Nintendo 3DS in Nov. sold 795,000 units, a 215 percent increase over the previous month.

In addition, Super Mario 3D Land has sold more than 625,000 units and is the fastest-selling Super Mario title in franchise history.

Nintendo Co. this week released Mario Kart 7 for the Nintendo 3DS to U.S. retail.

Nintendo this week released a new system update for the Nintendo 3DS that adds new functionality to the hardware, including the ability to record video in 3D.

With the system update, users can record up to 10 minutes of 3D video in continuous or stop-motion style.

In addition, the update offers easier Nintendo eShop purchases, the option to cue up purchases, game file transfer functionality between 3DS hardware, and the option to add another Nintendo 3DS owner as an online friend without a friend code.

The 3DS ranked two titles in the top 10 for the week, including Mario Kart 7 at No. 1 with 423,619 copies sold and Super Mario 3D Land at No. 4 with 73,907 sold.

Technology News

Google Inc. this week said the Android Market has served more than 10 billion app downloads.

The Android Market, which offers downloadable applications to Android-based devices, reached the one million download mark in June 2010. By July 2011, the Market held six billion downloads.

DirecTV this week began selling a new HD DVR that includes recording software by Tivo Inc. in limited markets.

The THR-22 includes recording functionality for 100 hours of HD 1080p programming or 400 hours of standard definition programming.

In addition, the hardware includes trademark Tivo functionality, including Season Pass, WishList Search, Swivel Search, and 30-second interval.

The DirecTV Tivo HD DVR is available in limited markets, including Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Sacramento, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington.

It will be available nationwide in early 2012.

A firm this week said Inc.’s Kindle Fire may take 50 percent off the Android tablet market in 2012, according to a new report.

Evercore Partners analyst Robert Cihra this week said he expects the Kindle Fire to estimate for half of all Android tablet sales in 2012.

In addition, he expects Apple Inc.’s iPad to maintain a competitive lead in the premium tablet sector.

Hewlett Packard Co. this week said it will maintain the webOS division as open source software for developers and hardware manufacturers.

The company this week said it will be active in development for the platform and make the webOS code available for open source license to hardware manufacturers, developers and partners.

The webOS software, acquired from the purchase of Palm Inc. in 2010, held lackluster demand on smartphones and tablets in global markets.

Verizon Wireless this week blocked Google Inc.’s Google Wallet payment service from Samsung Electronic Co. Ltd.’s new Galaxy Nexus smartphone citing security meausures.

A company spokesperson this week said is working to have the best security user experience and will allow Google Wallet to function on the device when the goal is achieved.
