NPD Group Inc. this week said Hewlett Packard Co.’s HP TouchPad was second to Apple Inc.’s iPad in U.S. tablet market share post clearance of the device.
In data the excludes share of the iPad, the HP TouchPad led market share U.S. tablet sales at 17 percent share between Jan. and Oct. 2011.
Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. followed at 16 percent, while Asustek Computer Inc. held 10 percent share.
Motorola Mobility Inc. and Acer Inc. rounded out the top five tablet U.S. tablet brands at nine percent market share each.
Tablet hardware sales excluding Apple totaled to $415 million with more than 1.2 million units sold.
HP this week said it wrote off $3.1 billion due to costs related to webOS, an operating system acquired from the purchase of Palm Inc. in 2010.
Part of the write-down included a $142 million loss from the clearance of the HP TouchPad tablet, which was discontinued in July due to slow sales.
