Most American children want Apple Inc.’s iPad tablet for Christmas according to a new survey by The Nielsen Company.

The firm this week said 44 percent of U.S. children ages 6 to 12 were interested in buying the iPad, while 30 percent wanted to purchase the iPod Touch.

The iPhone rounded out the top three most wanted products at 27 percent.

The iPad, which currently dominates the tablet market at 30 million units sold, shipped 9.25 million units in the third quarter of 2011.

Apple in Oct. reported it sold 17.07 million iPhones in Q4, below the 20 million units estimated by analysts, which concluded buyers held out for the release of the iPhone 4S.

The company sold 4 million iPhone 4S units at launch in the first three days of sale to set a new sales record for the device.
