Capcom Co.’s Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 is a fine update that adds 12 brand new characters, updated balancing, and a Spectator Mode to round out a top fight fest for fans of either universe.
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 utilizes a functional three-button attack system. A Special Attack Button initiates an Air Combo, Team Aerial Combo, Team Aerial Counter and the X-Factor to temporarily boost strength and mobility in a one-match maneuver. Partner 1 and Partner 2 buttons call out other members of the three-person team.
In character selection, users can choose Normal or Simple Mode, the latter of which allows for easier supers in a limited move set. Also, users can choose from unique Assist Attacks for each character.
Mechanic changes include shortened duration and damage scaling of the ‘X-Factor’ special move and adjusted attack and speed boosts.
New Capcom characters include Frank West, Nemesis T-Type, Phoenix Wright, Strider Ryu, Vergil, and Firebrand.
New Marvel characters include Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Hawkeye, Nova, Rocket Raccoon, and Iron Fist.
The new roster is well-integrated to the franchise, with Frank West tossing whole zombies to opponents, Nemesis hulking with rocket launcher attacks, Rocket Racoon packing a pint-sized arsenal, Strider Ryu slashing with fury, and Ghost Rider whipping classic chain attacks.
The most complex new character is Phoenix Wright, which wields unorthodox moves like sneezing, calling assistant Maya to trip enemies, and a mode change to toss court papers instead of calling Maya.
Combo attacks and guard systems operate with buttery grace that moves from one snappy beat down to the next. Skill-based moves like Snap Back, Crossover, Partner Move and Advancing Guard will keep veteran users on guard with smart defensive options.
The new Spectator Mode allows up to six users to watch a versus match to offer virtual tournament viewing action. Online matches are lag-free and solid.
The graphics engine is stellar at 60 frames-per-second. The new roster matches the original with dark outlines, clever animations, and trademark phrases to call from each respective universe. The sound engine is solid with a pattering of smacks dealt from each aggressive combination.
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is a great update to the original with an improved roster, balance, and enough punch to hold the tag team, beat-down crown among franchise heavyweights.
