Media Create Co. this week said the Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 ranked No. 2 in hardware sales in the latest Japan retail activity.

The PS3 sold 23,897 units between Oct. 17 to Oct. 23 to rank No. 2 in overall hardware sales.

By comparison, the hardware sold 28,596 to rank third the week prior.

The hardware ranked five titles in the top 10, including Namco Bandai Games Inc.’s Gekijouban Macross F: Sayonara no Tsubasa at No. 1, Spike’s Dead Island at No. 5, EA Inc.’s FIFA 12 at No. 6, Konami Corp.’s World Soccer Winning Eleven 2012 at No. 7, and Ace Combat: Assault Horizon at No. 8.

Sony in July posted a $191 million loss in the first quarter amid lower sales of the PS3.

The company sold 1.8 million PS3 units in the quarter, down from 2.4 million one year prior.

It expects to sell 15 million PS3 units in the next fiscal year, an increase from 14.3 units.

Sony in Aug. price cut the PS3 160GB SKU to $249.99.

In addition, the PS3 320GB Move Bundle now sells at $349.99.

The Playstation 3 320GB Infamous 2 Bundle includes the PS3 320GB hardware SKU, Infamous 2, a 30-day Playstation Plus trail membership and Dualshock 3 Controller at $299.99.

In Nov. it will sell the Playstation 3 320GB Uncharted 3: Drake’s Fortune Bundle at $299.99.
