Launch sales for Apple Inc.’s iPhone have broken records at two U.S. wireless carriers which cited strong demand for the new device.

Sprint Nextel Corp. this week said it recorded its best day in sales history through multiple channels from demand for the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4. It is the only U.S. carrier to offer an unlimited data plan for the devices.

AT&T Inc. concurrently claimed record activations for the device.

Sprint this month held a sold out status of the iPhone 4S 16GB SKU due to strong pre-order demand.

AT&T in Oct. said it pre-sold 200,000 iPhone 4S units due to high demand from customers.

Apple this month said pre-order sales for the iPhone 4S have topped 1 million units in the first 24 hours of pre-order sales.

Apple Inc. may sell up to 4 million iPhone 4S units at launch this weekend according to a new report.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek this week said analysts peg initial sales of the iPhone 4S between two to three million units, with an analyst from research firm Yankee Group estimating four million units sold at launch.

Apple Inc. is preparing to begin the manufacturing process for the iPad 3 according to a new report.

All Things Digital this week claimed the next iPad is heading into production soon based on a supply chain check by an analyst from Susquehanna Financial Group LLLP.

The firm estimates that Apple is increasing its iPad supply production to 12 to 14 million units, up from 11 to 13 million units in the forth quarter.

It suggests the increase is due to an estimated 600,000 to 1 million iPad 3 builds.

The report estimates an early 2012 launch for the device.

Research in Motion Ltd. this week said it has fully restored service to Blackberry devices after a three-day outage that plagued global markets.

RIM Thurs. said global Blackberry services are operating well and that support teams will continue to monitor the situation to ensure service stability.

It added customers in Canada and Latin America may see intermittent message delays.

This week, a Blackberry service outage affected the U.S., Japan, Singapore, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

RIM this week blamed a core switch failure in RIM’s infrastructure. The failure is designated to failover to a backup, which did not function correctly.

As a result a backlog of data was generated and must be cleared prior to restoring service.

Apple Inc. this week released iTunes 10.5.

iTunes 10.5, which is required to upgrade to iOS 5, includes new iTunes in the Clouds functionality to store purchased content to the iCloud service and push to all devices, new Wi-Fi syncing functionality, and support for the iTunes Match service to add iCloud storage of imported CDs at $24.99 per year.

iTunes Match will be available by the end of Oct.

Apple Inc. this week released iOS 5 for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch devices.

The new mobile software includes features like a Notification Center, iMessage to send unlimited text messages via Wi-Fi or 3G, Newsstand to organize subscriptions, Reminders, Twitter integration, new Camera features, and software updates without connectivity to a computer.

In addition, Apple this week launched iCloud, a free cloud online storage service for data backup, syncing, and access across devices. iCloud requires iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5.

iTunes 10.5, which is required to upgrade to iOS 5, includes new iTunes in the Clouds functionality to store purchased content to the iCloud service and push to all devices, new Wi-Fi syncing functionality, and support for the iTunes Match service to add iCloud storage of imported CDs at $24.99 per year.

The Mac OS X 10.7.2 update includes support for the iCloud service and multiples software fixes.

Motorola Mobility Inc. this week said it will sell the XOOM Family Edition Tablet at Best Buy Co. Inc. retail stores and at at beginning Oct. 16.

The Motorola XOOM Family Edition will include Google Inc.’s Android 3.1 Honeycomb OS, 1GHz Dual-Core CPU, 10.1 IPS HD display, 16GB Memory, 5MP camera with flash and 720p video webcam, front-facing camera, and $40 worth of applications pre-loaded at $379.00.

The Family Edition SKU will include Kid Mode by Zoodles, an application that locks the Home button and allows to only access content deemed acceptable.

AT&T Inc. this week said it will release five new smartphones that include Google Inc.’s Android OS.

New devices include Motorola Mobility Inc.’s Atrix 2, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.’s Captivate Glide and Doubletime, Pantech Curitel’s Pantech Pocket, and ZTE Corp.’s AT&T Avail.

The Atrix 2 will include a 1Ghz Dual-Core CPU, 4.3-inch qHD display, 1GB RAM, 8MP camera with 1080p HD video capture, front-facing camera, HSPA+ 21Mbps functionality, optional Lapdock 100 connectivity and Android 2.3.

The Samsung Captivate Glide will include a 1Ghz Dual-Core Nvidia Tegra 2 CPU, 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 8MP camera with 1080p video capture, 1.3MP front-facing camera, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and Android 2.3.

The Samsung Doubletime will include a 600Mhz CPU, 3.2-inch 320 x 480 display, 3.2MP camera, digital camera and camcorder functionality.

The Pantech Pocket will include a 4-inch SVGA display, 5MP camera with flash and HD recording, and 4G support.

Finally, the AT&T Avail is a pre-paid device that will include a 3.5-inch touch-screen display, 5MP camera, and Android 2.3.

Facebook Inc. this week released the new Facebook application for Apple Inc.’s iPad tablet.

In the new Facebook iPad app, games, apps, groups, and lists are assigned to a left hand menu. Notifications and messages appear at the top of the screen.

In addition to standard social networking functionality, the app allows users to chat and play games in full-screen mode.

Finally, the photo album includes full-screen functionality that users can swipe to flip through. Inc.’s new Kindle Fire device ranked as the top-selling tablet at the retailer due to strong pre-order demand.

This week, the Kindle Fire ranked as the No. 1 best-selling tablet in Amazon’s Electronics division.

Hewlett Packard Co.’s discontinued TouchPad 32GB SKU ranked as the No. 2 best-selling tablet, followed by the TouchPad 16GB SKU at No. 3 in the same period.

Netflix Inc. this week ejected plans to split off its DVD business into an entity called Qwikster.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings this week said the company will keep DVD rentals and streaming at Netflix to allow customers to maintain access at one website.

The company in Sept. said it would relay its DVD rental business to Qwikster in order to allow the DVD business to grow and be marketed independently.

Qwickster was said to offer DVD rentals, in addition to game rentals for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3, Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360, and Nintendo Co.’s Wii hardware.

The company did not say if it would integrate video game rentals to Netflix.

Netflix Inc., CBS Corp. and Warner Bros. Television Group this week announced a new partnership to allow Netflix to stream TV programming from The CW network to members.

Under the four-year licensing agreement, U.S. members of Netflix can watch all prior seasons of The CW programming from the current schedule to the 2014 – 2015 season.

Programs include Ringer, Hart of Dixie, The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, 90210, Supernatural, Nikita and One Tree Hill.

Episodes for the current season will be available beginning this fall.

Prior seasons of select shows will be available Oct. 15.

Microsoft Corp. this week said the new Task Manager for the Windows 8 operating system will include new features to help identify and close intensive programs.

The Windows 8 Task Manager will initially prompt view of Application processes, including those unresponsive, rather than an entire list of background PC tasks likely unrelated to the problem. From there, users can close the program end the task in one click.

Additionally, programs will be listed in a Friendly Name format to allow better understanding of each process. A right-click of the process will open a menu that includes a search for the process term in a default search engine.

The new Heatmap function in Task Manager will include CPU, Memory, Disk and Network counters to detail the percentage of usage each process is utilizing. Ending a CPU intensive task will dynamically adjust the total usage of the CPU by all tasks.

Finally, all processes will grouped under a main parent process to better to understand how each is associated.

T-Mobile Inc. this week said it will release the T-Mobile SpringBoard and Samsung Electronic Co. Ltd.’s Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets by this holiday.

The T-Mobile SpringBoard, manufactured by Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., is a 7-inch HD multi-touch tablet that includes a 1.2Ghz Dual-Core CPU, 5MP camera with 720p HD video recording functionality, 1.3MP front-facing camera, SD card slot for up 32GB of storage, and Google Inc.’s Android 3.2 Honeycomb OS.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 includes a 10.1-inch HD display, 1Ghz Dual-Core Nvidia Tegra 2 CPU, 1GB RAM, 3MP camera with 720p HD video recording functionality, 2MP front-facing camera, GPS, and the Android 3.2 Honeycomb OS.

Both tablets will utilize T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 4G network.
