Sprint Nextel Corp. this week said it will begin pre-order sales for Apple Inc.’s new iPhone 4S Oct. 7.

It is currently accepting pre-order sales for the iPhone 4 starting at $99 for the 8GB SKU.

Sprint confirmed this week the iPhone 4S will be eligible for unlimited data plans. Users can receive 450 minutes and unlimited data at $69.99 per month or unlimited minutes and data at $99.99 per month.

Verizon Wireless ended unlimited data plan options in July, while AT&T Inc. ended unlimited data plans in June.

Apple this week said the iPhone 4S will be available via AT&T Inc., Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel Corp. Oct. 14 starting at $199.

The iPhone 4S will include the A5 Dual-Core CPU, 8MP camera, 1080p HD video recording functionality, iOS 5, and a new voice command protocol called Suri.

Suri can call, text, email, remind, and offer weather, stock, traffic, direction, and definition information via voice commands.

Battery is said to offer 8 hours of 3G talk time and 10 hours of video.

Additionally, the device will merge CDMA and GSM antennas into one world phone device.

The 16GB SKU will sell at $199, 32GB at $299 and 64GB at $399.

Apple did not announce the next main update to the iPhone family, iPhone 5, this week.

A prior report claimed the iPhone 5 will include at least a 4-inch touch-screen display and a thinner profile.

The iPhone utilizes the iOS operating system used in iPod Touch and iPad 2 products.

Sprint currently holds 52 million subscribers. By comparison, Verizon Wireless holds 106 million subscribers and AT&T Inc. holds 96 million subscribers.
