Microsoft Corp.’s Worms: Ultimate Mayhem for the Xbox Live division of Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 is a standard turn-based strategy title that hooks Worms 3D and Worms 4: Mayhem together for local or online warfare.
Worms: Ultimate Mayhem includes Quick Game, Story, Worms 3D Campaign, Versus, Challenges, and Worms 3D Survival Challenges.
Users can create their own custom team to be use in multiple modes, or choose default teams including Funky Dudes, Gunslinger, Scots, and Specimen.
Ultimate Mayhem offers 3D locations to allow more strategic position options, like behind objects or in different elevation levels.
A large arsenal of weaponry can be chosen, from bazookas, grenades, homing missiles, dynamite, a fire punch, and landmines to obliterate free-standing enemy worms. Players have a few seconds to move after weapon deployment to enhance their position.
In addition, each level may yield environmental attack variables like TNT, or warp zones for defensive maneuvers.
The action holds at a moderate pace, with on-screen HP reduction appearing five to six seconds after damage. In addition, worm movement is slow and movement is limited.
The graphics engine is adequate at 30 frames-per-second. Worms and environments include elementary construction amid bright color saturation. The sound engine includes high-pitched quips from worms prior to and following attacks.
Worms: Ultimate Mayhem is a decent compilation for franchise fans. While the 3D environments add a new strategic dimension, the slower pace and limited movement options may cause strategy veterans to squirm.
