Microsoft Corp. this week said sales for the Kinect hardware for the Xbox 360 are under par in Japan.

Takashi Sensui, General Manager of the Xbox business in Japan, told The Wall Street Journal this week that sales of the Kinect have not met the company’s initial expectations in the region.

He added the company needs to reach a wider range of people and hopes new dance and sports software will broaden consumer interest in the Kinect.

New Kinect titles to be sold in 2011 include Kinect Sports 2 and Dance Central 2.

In 2012 it will sell the Xbox 360 Limited Edition Star Wars Kinect Bundle at $449.99.

Microsoft in June said it has sold 10 million Kinect and 10 million stand-alone Kinect titles globally.

Kinect, released Nov. 4, sells at $149.99.

Kinect launch titles include Kinect Sports, Kinect Joy Ride, Kinect Adventures!, Kinectimals, Game Party: In Motion, Your Shape: Fitness Evolved, Dance Central, The Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout, and Sonic Free Riders.

Bundle SKUs include the Xbox 360 250GB Kinect Special Edition Bundle at $399.99 and the Xbox 360 4GB with Kinect bundle at $299.99.
