Nintendo Co. this week said owners of the Nintendo 3DS can now download an application from Netflix Inc. to enable streaming to the Nintendo 3DS handheld.

Netflix members with unlimited streaming plans can watch TV and movies in 2D on the handheld’s upper screen. An additional library of 3D movies will be available soon.

“The new Netflix application looks great, plays great and is a fantastic consumer experience,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime.

“It gives Nintendo 3DS owners access to an amazing wealth of movies and TV shows, which they can watch conveniently from thousands of free Wi-Fi access points across the country. Nintendo 3DS truly offers something for everyone.”

Nintendo in July released a new system update for the Nintendo 3DS.

The Nintendo eShop online store includes a free Pokedex 3D application to allow users to view Pokemon from Pokemon Black and Pokemon White in 3D. In addition, users can download the NES title Excitebike in 3D as a free download through July 7.

Virtual Console content includes Super Mario Land, Alleyway, and Radar Mission. New content will be added each Thursday.

The company said an application for short-form video service to view 3D movie trailers, comedy clips and music videos will be enabled in the future.

Nintendo released Nintendo 3DS handheld launched with 18 software titles Mar. 27.

First-party titles include Pilotwings Resort, Steel Diver, and nintendogs + cats.

Third-party titles include Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, The Sims 3, Madden NFL Football, Pro Evolution Soccer 2011, LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, Ridge Racer 3D, Super Monkey Ball, Bust-A-Move Universe, Samurai Warriors, Asphalt 3D, Combat of Giants, Rayman 3D, and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Shadow Wars.

Titles carry an MSRP of $39.99 each.

The Nintendo 3DS handheld sells at $249.99.

The hardware is sold in Cosmic Black or Aqua Blue at $249.99 each.

The Nintendo 3DS includes two screens, a 3D Depth Slider, a Circle Pad, and a 2GB SD Card.

Functionality includes StreetPass to exchange game data between owners who pass one another.

Additionally, the hardware will include the Nintendo 3DS Camera software, Mii Maker, and the Nintendo eShop to download new software.

Nintendo 3DS includes 3-D display technology that does not require the use of special glasses.

In addition, the 3DS is backwards compatible with Nintendo DS and DSi games.
