Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 ranked second in U.S. hardware sales in the latest retail activity.

NPD Group Inc. this week said the PS3 sold 177,000 units to rank as the second best-selling hardware in Apr.

The figure represents a 15 percent increase in year-over-year sales.

Sony in May said the Networked Products and Services division, which includes the Playstation 3 and PSP business, recorded a profit of $492 million in the fourth quarter.

By comparison, the division held a $1.02 billion loss the year prior.

For the fiscal year ending Mar. 31, 2011, the company sold 14.3 million PS3 units, an increase from 13 million one year prior.

The PSP handheld sold eight million units, down 1.9 million units one year go.

The company expects to sell 15 million PS3 units, six million PSP units and four million PS2 units in the next fiscal year.

Software sales increased to 46.6 million units, up 2.2 million from one year go.

The PS3 160GB Call of Duty: Black Ops Bundle, which began sale May 31, will include the PS3 160GB hardware, a copy of Activision Blizzard Inc.’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, the Call of Duty: Black Ops First Strike DLC Pack, and a Dualshock 3 Controller at $299.99.

Sony in May began sale of the Limited Edition PSP Entertainment Pack, which includes the PSP-3000 handheld, 2GB Memory Stick Pro, Gran Turismo, and MLB 11 The Show at $199.99.
