EA Inc. this week said it is on board to develop titles for Nintendo Co.’s new Wii U hardware.

Titles optioned for the hardware include Battlefield 3, EA Sports titles, and EA Games titles.

Nintendo this week said it will release Wii U, the successor the Wii hardware in 2012, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.

The Wii U controller includes a 6.2-inch touch screen that allows users to transfer gameplay to the controller screen, or use the added screen to relay menu items.

The controller includes two analog circle pads, a d-pad, touch screen, microphone, speakers, gyrophone, face buttons and two sets of triggers.

Images to the controller screen wirelessly from the Wii U. Titles can be structured to use the controller and the screen at the same time. Examples include swiping a ninja star from the controller that fires to the TV screen.

Additionally features include Wii U controller web browsing and video call chat.

The hardware will be fully backwards compatible with the Wii.

New game titles include a new entry in the Smash Bros. franchise and LEGO City Stories. The company will demonstrate eight new interactive experiences at the E3 show floor.

Game concepts include New Super Mario Bros. Mii to insert a Mii avatar into the title, and titles that include a different perspective depending on whether the player uses the Wii U controller or Wii Remote.

Third-party titles include a new Tekken, Ghost Recon Online, Assassin’s Creed, Dirt, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Metro Last Night, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge, and Darksiders 2.

Nintendo in May began sale of the Wii Mario Kart Bundle, which includes the Wii hardware, Mario Kart Wii, and a Wii Wheel at $149.99.

In addition, Nintendo in May began sale of new Nintendo Selects titles for Wii at $19.99 each.

The Wii has sold 86 million units worldwide to date since launch in 2006.

New Wii titles to be sold in 2011 include Wii Play: Motion with Black Wii Remote Plus SKU and Mystery Case Files: Dust to Dust.
