Media Create Co. this week said the Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 ranked third in hardware sales in the latest Japan retail activity.
The PS3 sold 15,987 units between May 23 and May 29 to rank No. 3 in overall hardware sales.
By comparison, it sold 12,935 units the week prior.
The hardware ranked two titles in the top 10, including Koei Tecmo Corp.’s Warriors: Legends of Troy at No. 2 and Nobunaga’s Ambition at No. 5.
Sony this week said the Playstation Store division of the Playstation Network is now available and updated with new content.
Sony June 2 fully restored all Playstation Network services, including the Playstation Store and Qriocity divisions in the Americas, Europe/PAL territories and Asia.
Full restoration of services include the Playstation Store, in-game commerce, ability to redeem vouchers and codes, Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3, PSP, Vaio, and other PCs, and Media Go functionality.
Restoration of Video on Demand and Music Unlimited services powered by Qriocity will be announced later.
Details for Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea remaining services on Qriocity will be announced as they become available.
Sony’s limited edition PS3 160GB Call of Duty: Black Ops Bundle ranked as the No. 1 best-selling product at GameStop Corp.’s online division this week amid launch of the new bundle SKU.
The PS3 160GB Call of Duty: Black Ops Bundle includes the PS3 160GB hardware, a copy of Activision Blizzard Inc.’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, the Call of Duty: Black Ops First Strike DLC Pack, and a Dualshock 3 Controller at $299.99.
Full access to all Playstation Network members will follow July 5th.
Sony this week said the NGP (Next-Generation Portable) won’t require a heavy investment compared to prior Playstation hardware.
Sony CFO Masaru Kato told The Wall Street Journal that the company could outsource chip-making to eliminate the cost of building a semiconductor factory.
In addition, it could utilize off-the-shelf components to reduce investment cost.
Sony this week said it will release Uncharted: Golden Abyss to the NGP handheld.
Developed by Sony Bend Studio, the title will incorporate standard and touch-based and gyroscopic controls to utilize NGP functionality.
Examples include the touch of a broken wall to jump across or tilting the handheld left and right to maintain balance.
Wipeout will allow users to compete against users of Wipeout HD Fury for the PS3 in online multiplayer sessions for up to eight.
Additionally, Wipeout NGP is said to include 10 new tracks, 20 new ships, new game modes and weapons.
Sony this week said it will release Sound Shapes to the NGP handheld.
Sound Shapes is a music platform title in which users control a sticky ball through levels to nab notes. Each note will add a new musical layer to the level.
In addition, users can create levels that relays custom music in each play.
Sony’s new Limited Edition PSP Entertainment Pack ranked in the top three sales at GameStop Corp.’s online division this week amid launch of the new bundle SKU.
Media Create Co. this week said the PSP sold 33,609 units between May 23 and May 29 to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the week.
The PSP go sold 76 units to rank No. 10 for the week.
The PSP ranked four titles in the top 10, including Akiba’s Trip at No. 4 and Konami Corp.’s Pro Baseball Spirits 2011 at No. 10.
Sales for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 hardware held in seventh place the latest Japan retail figures.
Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Xbox 360 sold 2,303 units between May 23 and May 29 to rank No. 7 in overall sales.
By comparison, the hardware sold 2,186 units the week prior.
The hardware did not rank any titles in the top 10.
Microsoft Corp. this week said that the Xbox 360 has sold 53 million units to date in global territories.
In a corporate blog post, Corporate Vice President, Corporate Communications Frank X. Shaw said that the Xbox will be marketed more as an entertainment brand this year, in part due to current partnerships with Netflix Inc., Hulu Inc., and ESPN for non-game content through Xbox Live.
Shaw said 40 percent of Xbox 360 usage is for non-gaming activity.
EA Inc. this week said it will release the Madden NFL 12 Hall of Fame Edition this fall.
The limited edition Hall of Fame Edition SKU will include a copy of Madden NFL 12, one of four Marshall Faulk trading cards with a hand-signed autograph from Marshal Faulk, and the Madden Ultimate Team Platinum Card Pack with 13 NFL Hall of Famers at $89.95.
A total of 125,000 units of the Hall of Fame Edition will be shipped to retail.
The title will include Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Each title will utilize a new interface for HD resolutions, redrawn high-resolution 2D art, effects, and fonts, all-new Trophies and Achievements, ‘Transfarring System’ to transfer save data between the PS3 and PSP, and improved audio quality.
In addition, it will release it will release the Zone of Enders HD Collection in Nov.
Activision Blizzard Inc. this week said it will deploy a new premium online service called Call of Duty: Elite.
Call of Duty Elite will launch in conjunction with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in Nov.
Activision will charge a monthly fee for the service, which is said to offer social functionality, competitions, premium map packs and tools like performance analytics.
The publisher has not disclosed pricing for the monthly subscription.
Standard online multiplayer functionality will still be included at no cost.
Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii ranked as the No. 4 hardware in Japan pending the reveal of the Wii successor this month.
Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Wii sold 7,438 units between May 23 and May 29 to rank No. 4 in overall sales.
By comparison, the Wii sold 6,269 units the week prior.
The hardware ranked one title in the top 10, Pandora’s Tower at No. 3 which sold 21,455 copies.
Sales for Nintendo Co.’s new Wii Mario Kart Bundle raced to the top three sales at Toys R Us Inc.’s online division post launch of the new SKU.
Nintendo this week said it will release a new system update for the Nintendo 3DS handheld that will add an Internet Browser and an online store June 6.
The Nintendo eShop online store will include a free Pokedex 3D application to allow users to view Pokemon from Pokemon Black and Pokemon White in 3D. In addition, users can download the NES title Excitebike in 3D as a free download through July 7.
Upcoming Virtual Console content includes Super Mario Land, Alleyway, and Radar Mission. New content will be added each Thursday.
The company said an application for short-form video service to view 3D movie trailers, comedy clips and music videos will be enabled in the future.
Nintendo this week said it will offer free Wi-Fi access for the Nintendo 3DS in 25,000 locations in the U.S.
The company said Nintendo 3DS users will have access to 24,000 Wi-Fi hotspots from AT&T, 1,000 Best Buy Co. Inc. stores and nearly 200 Simon Group Property shopping malls.
The Nintendo 3DS sold 24,283 units to rank as the No. 2 hardware for the week in Japan.
The 3DS ranked one title in the top 10, Capcom Co.’s One Piece: Unlimited Cruise SP at 80,488 copies sold to rank at No. 1.
Reports claim the Wii successor, dubbed Project Café, will have a three-core CPU, 6.2-inch touch-screen controller, and high-definition functionality.
The controller is said to be able to stream content from the console.
T-Mobile USA Inc. this week said it will sell the HTC Sensation 4G by HTC Corp. by June 15 in the U.S.
Additionally, the device will be sold at select Wal-Mart Stores Inc. locations June 12.
The HTC Sensation 4G will include 1.2GHz Dual-Core Qualcomm CPU, 4.3-inch Super LCD qHD (540 x 940) capacitive touch screen, 4GB storage, 8MP rear camera with dual LED flash and 1080p HD recording functionality, front-facing camera, 4G support via HSPA+ and Google Inc.’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS.
