Sales for Sony Corp.’s PSP held a lead over Nintendo Co.’s Nintendo 3DS handheld in the latest retail figures from Japan.

Media Create Co. this week said the PSP sold 33,609 units between May 23 and May 29 to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the week.

The PSP go sold 76 units to rank No. 10 for the week.

The PSP ranked four titles in the top 10, including Akiba’s Trip at No. 4 and Konami Corp.’s Pro Baseball Spirits 2011 at No. 10.

The Nintendo 3DS sold 24,283 units to rank as the No. 2 hardware for the week.

The 3DS ranked one title in the top 10, Capcom Co.’s One Piece: Unlimited Cruise SP at 80,488 copies sold to rank at No. 1.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo DSi LL sold 5,197 units to rank No. 5, the Nintendo DSi sold 5,106 to rank No. 6, and the DS Lite sold 139 units to rank No. 9 in the same period.

Nintendo in Apr. said the Nintendo 3DS sold 3.61 million by end of the fiscal Mar., below the company’s four million unit projection.

The Nintendo 3DS handheld began sale in the U.S. Mar. 27 at $249.99.

Nintendo 3DS includes 3-D display technology that does not require the use of special glasses.

Nintendo in Mar. began sale of the Pokemon Black Nintendo DSi Bundle and the Pokemon White Nintendo DSi Bundle.

Sony in Jan. said it will the NGP (Next-Generation Portable) handheld in holiday 2011.

The NGP will include the dual analog sticks, a 5-inch multi-touch OLED display, 3G & GPS, front and rear touch panels, and a compass on three axes. It will utilize flash-memory game cards.

Hardware specifications include an ARM Cortex A9 4-core CPU, front camera, rear camera, built-in microphone, and Bluetooth 2.1.

Sony in May began sale of the Limited Edition PSP Entertainment Pack, which includes the PSP-3000 handheld, 2GB Memory Stick Pro, Gran Turismo, and MLB 11 The Show at $199.99.
