Media Create Co. this week said the Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 ranked third in hardware sales in the latest Japan retail data amid an outage of the Playstation Network division.

The PS3 sold 23,954 units between Apr. 25 and May 1 to rank No. 3 in overall hardware sales.

The hardware ranked two titles in the top 10, including El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron at No. 3 and Konami Corp.’s Pro Spirits Baseball 2011 at No. 8.

By comparison, the Wii sold 8,122 units the week prior.

Nintendo Co. said this week it will price cut the Wii hardware to $149.99 and discount select Wii titles to under $20.

Beginning May 15, Nintendo will sell a new Wii bundle SKU that includes the Wii hardware, Mario Kart Wii with Wii Wheel, and Wii Sports at $149.99.

In addition, it will retail new Nintendo Select titles for Wii at $19.99 each.

Titles include The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Animal Crossing: City Folk, and Mario Super Sluggers.

Nintendo this week told investors that it does not believe Microsoft Corp.’s Kinect for Xbox 360 are affecting demand for the company’s Wii hardware.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata told investors in a Q&A that regarding whether Kinect contributed to significantly expanding the number of Xbox users, the number of Wii users has grown to about 10 million, but the growth in the number of Microsoft users is much smaller.

New reports claim the Wii successor, dubbed Project Café, will employ an 8GB flash storage option and a utilize 25GB optical disc format.

Prior reports said will have a three-core CPU, 6.2-inch touch-screen controller, and high-definition functionality.

The controller is said to be able to stream content from the console.

Nintendo Co.’s Nintendo 3DS handheld struck back at Sony Corp.’s PSP to take top hardware sales in the latest Japan tally.

The Nintendo 3DS sold 28,413 units to rank as the No. 2 hardware for the week.

The 3DS ranked two titles in the top 15, nintendogs _ cats at No. 12 and Pilotwings Resort at No. 13.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo DSi LL sold 9,235 units to rank No. 5, the Nintendo DSi sold 7,584 to rank No. 6, and the DS Lite sold 319 units to rank No. 9 in the same period.
